How would I give the message that I'm fine with the acquaintanceship the way it is? I see her only on the bus every so often, and we exchange a few words. I find her pleasant to talk to, but I have no desire for more contact than I already have with her or for more friendship.

In that case, what you did is perfectly fine. If you had moved to sit beside her, it would've meant you wanted more closeness. What you did is not rude at all. You're not expected to move to the seat beside her at this level of acquaintanceship between you.

Thank you, pat. In fact, I chose that avatar a bit as an inside joke because so many on WP and outside comment on my "wisdom". It's true I have gathered lots of wisdom in all these decades of trying, but unfortunately not enough to fit in.
