Some of my special interests have also been hobbies.
When I was younger I used to have a fascination with Kermit the Frog and the Muppet Show. Also I was fascinated with maps, trains and bridges.
As I got into school, I became fascinated with state capital buildings and skyscrapers.
In middle school I become fascinated with and would draw floor plans for houses. About this time I also developed an interest in hotel directories.
Out of school, it has been classical music, religion, politics, and over the last year and a half, flood recovery in our community.
Sadly, I have also been obsessed with a few people in my life.
I've had lots of different special interests, but only a select few are primary obsessions. With these select special interests, there was a period of time when the special interest literally was all I'd think about or talk about. For these special interests, I will bold them and indicate when the rambling period was. Since I never outgrow my special interests (I just will switch from one primary obsession to another in what dominates my thinking), I am going to just put the ages I was most obsessed with the topic. Note: I am 22 now.

Have you ever used Perler Beads? You use this peg board thingie to put them on, then iron them flat to make things. I was on a kick making coasters of video game characters for a while there, lol...
I made my son a really neat R2D2, but we wound up giving it to his friend for his birthday... I want to make another, but the beads get all over the floor and hurt your feet, so I stopped with them temporarily, lol.

Ooooh, yes, I had those too! I wonder if I still have them somewhere. That R2D2 one is great! Is it bigger than the normal ones?

It was huge! It took... let me think... 9 of the large boards to be able to make it I believe... it was really hard to iron them all together, as I only had 1 of the large pegboards at the time, so had to make it square by square and try to get it all lined up and ironed together well enough to stick
It took about 1000 beads to make it o.O That was a lot of sorting, lol. It took about 5 hours to make it.

I usually have 3 or 4 interests "active" at any one time, usually for about a month.
I'll start at age 8 onwards:
8-9: Outer space and geography
9-10: Creating newspapers and ID cards (a sort of paradigm shift in my activity choices due to getting a new computer)
11-13: The World Wrestling Federation (now called WWE)
14-15: Writing screen-plays and short stories.
15-16: Italian culture and my Italian heritage
Ages 16.5-19 are the dark ages. I was succumbed to schizoaffective disorder and lost my ability to enjoy activities.
20-present: Mathematics, science, and philosophy. Those are very broad terms, and I meant to keep them broad as I am interested in many fields of mathematics, science, and philosophy. These are my dominant obsessions, and probably will remain as such for the rest of my adult life.

That is interesting. I believe my interest stemmed from dreams I had around 8 years ago. I then got talking to a few people on the internet who explained these to me, opened my own chatroom on yahoo for native americans and those interested to learn, and read as much as I could. I was invited by several to go to the USA to Pine Ridge, but being in the Uk, and not having the means, it never happened.
