I have been told similar by people for whom I went out of my way to give my time, money, and attention, and would have taken on their suffering so they didn't have to experience it. Perhaps I was inadequately conveying that I cared. Perhaps they mistook my innate traits and withdrawn demeanour for self-centredness. Perhaps they were just being self-centred.

Not those words directly, but hinted as "You only want to go places when YOU need to be somewhere". Sorry I don't want to drive 30mph on a single carriageway to some organic dog food store to get dog food, my idea of a car ride is down long winding roads without any intention of being somewhere, sort of like an ADD switch, see a road, turn down it.
