I need to be alone in silence. I don't mind noise of my choice say if I want the TV on the background but other peoples noise means I can't conentrate on anything. Had the same problem at work and used to stay after everyone had gone home to do stuff. Have complained that exam conditions weren't quiet enough for me as well - people were allowed to leave if they finished early or chatted when they were handing in their papers.

Yes I prefer counterirritants as well; good noise, people to ignore (walking by, not talking much to me though). Drives me deeper into myself so I can soak up the data.
