My controversial special interests include Ulster unionism, British nationalism and the overseas territories in general.

You should move here to the UK. There's bound to be a CCTV control centre that would suit you! To be serious though I don't much like CCTV but there's little that one can do about it. I try to take photos of them every once in a while and leave it at that. If they can shoot me, I can shoot them.

Methods of execution. Most of my friends think it's a bit morbid, but I'm really fascinated by violent yet legitimate death. My favorite is decapitation with a razor sharp sword - quick and merciful. It would be my choice, if I ever were so unfortunate as to find myself in such a situation.

I do have interests that're morbid and unproductive. I use to sit and ask myself why I was obsessed with an interest that wasn't healthy nor productive.

I've tried and tried to fight some of my useless interests just to invest interest into something that may be useful. But I have yet to find the cure for this. It isn't so much that I'm ashamed of my interests but rather that it takes up my time and keeps me away from tasks I want to do or learn about.

Funny, I always read that decapitation was one of the most painful ways to die.

Living with a Christian I have to keep my interest about evolution hidden away in secret.
Communism, but that's not really a special interest, that's who I am and have been since I was in my late teens.

I think there's two types of controversial interest, or at least i have a two part answer

1 - anything where carrying out or taking part in your obsession would be illegal and/or hurt people - these you have to keep to yourself, tell no-one, not even the people you think you can trust. Thinking it isn't a crime but tell someone and you'll be treated as a criminal or at best a suspect. Should something ever happen around you it might come back to haunt you and truely make you a suspect. If you think you are at risk of carrying it out, you have to seek profiessional help, even if that just means ringing an anon helpline. If you know it is just something you want to read about, look at, investigate or whatever, then do it alone and keep it that way.

2 - Anything taboo or likely to upset a group of people or cause general embarisment - this is down to you in the end and will be different for each person. Consider the social reaction of people and how/if that bothers you, weigh that up against the possible enjoyment you might get of finding someone to share it with and the freedom you may find of it being in the open and not having to hide it. Remember tho that once something it out in public, you no longer control it. You could move on from your interest and 5 years later it could still be the one thing people remember about you.

Two of my previous special interests would be class under your first category. I was obsessed with serial killers and then at another stage, collecting knifes of all different sorts. Of course I was never planning on hurting people but I was definitely treated as a public safety risk after an appointment with a psychologist. I wish I kept my interests to myself but she asked what I enjoyed so I told her.

I don't think I've ever had a special interest that would upset other people or cause embarrassment...actually I take that back. I previously had an obsession with strange birth defects and people would tell me to stop being so callous.

Ever since I was a kid...and even to a lesser extent today...I'd have ongoing obsessions with certain people.
Not celebrities...but people I actually knew in real life.

It fits into category #2, for sure...

My "person of interest" when I was 15-16 actually got so intense that I had to confess to him about it.

Carbon monoxide poisoning is only merciful if the convict is already drugged or unconscious. Otherwise there will be very unpleasant reflexes of holding breath, like in the gas chamber.

Are you sure? Have you asked? I'm a devout Christian and completely believe in Evolution. Sure, the Bible is Word of G-d, but why can't the Word be an analogy? Even if this person is a Fundie, he or she may not be anti-evolution or anti-science. Of course, if this person has told you they hate the theory of evolution and will cause you harm if you have an interest in it, that's a different story. But not every Christian disbelieves evolution.

I had an obsessive interest in the Holocaust for a long time...I was trying to understand how something so evil could have happened, I think. Part of trying to prevent history from repeating itself. Also, I came across a WWII comic that depicted the evils of the Nazis and the Holocaust at a very young age...6, I think. (I was an advanced reader.) The horror of it stuck with me and developed into a special interest as I got older. I have read a lot about it, from fictional children's books to the diary of Primo Levi (who managed to keep a secret diary during the years he was in a concentration camp).

My main special interest is names. My mother has always encouraged this and my husband will once in a while discuss names with me. I know what 100s of names mean, their origin, and so on. I've always been obsessed with names, and while it annoys people at times, I don't think it's controversial -- although when I was studying in Ireland one summer, the others on the study thought it was bizarre that I kept a list of Irish names.

Anything not in accordance with evangelical Christian beliefs is considered controversial in Texas, unless you live in either Austin or Houston.

Thankfully, I live in Houston.
