I don't want the neighbors watching me. I know they would all be looking out their windows saying "OMG, get a load of this, CC is trying to pull out of her drive way and she almost ran over the mailman."

Up in the mountains, where we live on a dirt road and don't have a lot of neighbors, only one across the road, I thought I'd try driving the riding lawn mower around for practice, backing up and turning around and all. The next thing you know I look across the road and the neighbors are all sitting out on lawn chairs watching me. They were having a cook out and had company so there were about ten of them. They were laughing and one of them said, "Well, she'll never get a speeding ticket." I was so embarrassed. I gave up and didn't try again, cause I knew they'd be watching me.

Drives me nuts topic

I am a disaster behind the wheel. I cannot foolow the movements in traffic. This is why I do not do video games. Too much sensory stimulation, and the dyspraxia ruins any chance of co-ordinating body and mind. 8O

19, Permit = License and License = Permit in Denmark.
I haven't got mine for various of reasons. One is that I haven't got the time.
Two is that I have some fears about it.

I don't trust myself not to crash into other vehicles. People have tried to teach me to drive before and all attempts were disasters. I even managed to drive a car into a ditch in the middle of nowhere when there was no other cars or buildings, so driving on the road would be impossible. I don't have a license but I really wish I could bring myself to want one. It would be so much more convenient than having to rely on public transportation which isn't reliable AT ALL.

I don't have my license - but I am determined to obtain learners and provisional license this year as I am tired of having to walk every where or catch public transport.
I find the whole concept terrifying - I worry that I'm going to accidently run someone over... when I was 17 I tried driving and almost drove the car into a ditch. Tried several times after that only to scream every time a car would drive behind me or try to overtake me and every time I would drive down a hill I would scream at the driving instructor, "What do I do? What do I do? What do I do???"... the driving instructor would laugh and at times would yell at me for screaming, but I couldn't help it, it just scared the bejeebus out of me!

I'm 35 and I don't have my license, nor do I want one.

I am 25.
I got my learners permit a few years ago
did a few lessons with dad.
then i found I was epileptic.

Dad said if he had known I was epileptic he wouldn't have did those lessons with me.

He doesn't like the idea of me driving because one of our relatives who had epilepsy, died after a bus crash. He was driving a bus, had a seizure and the bus veared off the road and hit a tree. a total tragic accident.

I don't have my license. I failed my road test four times, and couldn't stand the failures anymore, so I gave up. I live in an urban area. Most of the places I go on a regular basis these days are in walking distance, and I use public transit to get anywhere that isn't close enough to walk.

I don't think they meant it as an insult. If they mentioned "speeding ticket," obviously they could tell you were working with your coordination. I would have tried joking around with them.

"SLOWLY BUT SURELY, RIGHT?!" I would have shouted back, with a smile/thumbs up.

I don't have my license, but only because I had no one to drive with me while I practiced. I had my permit for a year and I ended up letting it expire after only driving a few times. Parents were busy, of course.

Got my licence at 30.
Having it is as much about identification as driving a car.
I tend to ride my bicycle or use public transport if it's available rather than drive.

Most countries have a seperate form of identification though, so it's not applicable everywhere. Still, in that case it's an added responsibility to at least get a license.

In the US, DMVs offer non-license photo IDs. They have numbers and everything so when you fill out job apps you can use that instead of a DL #.

I've had my license since I was 17.. I drive 2 cars, 0 accidents, 0 tickets.. I find driving more relaxing, personally, than terrifying.

I also drive in seattle, usually in god-awful traffic, but lately I've worked graveyard shifts, and drive at night, where nothing ever happens.

I'm the type of person who doesn't pay attention to anyone or anything in their environment, and when I ride in the car I scream if I think we're about to crash into someone, which is usually just normal driving/traffic conditions. These things mean that I could easily get into a crash if I got behind the wheel, and mom says that I would be (mentally) traumatized if I got into an accident.

I rarely leave my house and its surrounding park area; and if I do, it's always to run errands with one or both of my parents. So realistically I don't need my license.

I don't.
I did.
Here we have a system. G1 for one year. Then G2 for one year. Then you get your G, which you have to renew every five years.

I had 'a' license for 11 years, but when it was time to take my G test our van blew it's transmission, and it wasn't fixed in time to take the test.
The driver's administration (can't remember it's official name right now) was happy to take my money (pre-paid) and let my license expire.

So I have to start all over again. Which means paying the fees for every test. If I ever get enough money saved up and manage to read the book again, I'll go for the test again.

I've been saying I will do it for a year and seven months now...

gar. :(

I'm 59 and never learned to drive. I think it might be a neat hobby, though - driving lessons once a week for the hell of it.

I'm epileptic. I haven't had a seizure in years, so I could legally get one, but I don't see the point. I live near where I work and I don't go anywhere anyway. There's no place to park on the street where my apartment is, cars are expensive, insurance is expensive, gas is expensive... it's just a pain in the ass.

I'm 51 and I've never taken the test. Driving terrifies me. I haven't been behind the wheel since 1975, and have no plans to take it up.
