That can happen to me. If I'm home and looking for something in a cabinet, I might not see it. My mom then looks and finds it right away.

I can "lose" things and start looking for them, only to discover I was holding it in my hand the whole time.

But the thing is, I have a hard time actually SEEING things... Even if I am looking for something and it is dead in front of me, I cannot SEE it. Unless it is in words, I have a hard time finding it. My friends can pass me by sometimes and I won't SEE them. I can see everything, but sometimes it just does not register, if you know what I am saying. It takes me a while to perceive and register things...

Yes, totally. I can 'lose' things that are right in front of me. I'm not sure if words help in my case, though. Some time back I realized I find things in the grocery store by memory, because at first it takes forever to find/see what I'm looking for. One of the local stores was bought out and they rearranged all the aisles -- I haven't bothered to go back.

I think the speed of processing is also part of it. Sometimes I get 'stuck' trying to get out a store door because of people zipping across in front of me. It's hard to perceive them and time my movements so that I don't run into anybody. Also at the end of store aisles I get really startled sometimes when people shoot by across the end (seems like it's gotten more discombobulating than when I was younger, unfortunately).
