I prefer "Silent" language to verbal, though i don't sign when stressed because no one else understands if it was something others would understand I probably would express more avidly in sign as it is a i kinda suppress, there was a study a while ago of autistic children and it was determined that NT children respond more to visual stimuli than autistic children do, but autistic children responded to aural(sound) stimuli much more than the NT children did and personally Ive always found aural stimuli more likely to over-stimulate me than lots of bright colours/fast movement, i wouldn't be surprised to find Aspie's are better none verbal communicators than most, it just gets "missed" because of fundamental differences in body-language and body-language usage, odd as that may read i suspect there's a great deal of subtlety to Aspie body-language and none verbal cues compared to the very "obvious"/"loud" NT body-language (if you've learned what to watch for).

I don't know that much sign, but I think it might be more difficult for me than speaking, because of the large-scale movements involved. Finger-spelling things might be as easy or easier than speaking, but you have to move your arms, and during overload that's kind of a tough proposition sometimes because I'm concentrating on standing. (Yeah, I'm dyspraxic, how'd you guess? )

So. Much. Like there's some kind of barrier or something.

Writing would be a hundred times easier sometimes (and typing even easier than that), but most people don't take kindly to your handing them a note instead of speaking; plus, I'd have to figure out how to find my pencil and paper in my backpack. So usually I just settle for standing there and not saying anything until I can put the words together as written words and "read" them off the mental chalkboard.

Written words are my first language. :)

I picked up some signs in special ed. I also took a class but remember nothing from the class. Anyway the weird thing for me is this:

I will sit there and realize I feel a finger thunking my chin. Then I realize I am making the sign for water. Only then do I realize I am thirsty. Happens with hunger and bathroom too.

I don't know any sign language (which are actually grammatically quite different from the local spoken language), so no.

Times of the sign topic

I admire users of ASL or BSL.Not many people I know can sign, so if I was fluent I would have to find someone and converse. Not always practical.

When stressed, i lose my language abilities. Just shuts off, and I am left mute. This may be better than screaming at someone, for that sort of communication does not work. :?
