That's not true, I hate taking out the trash.

I picked the trash collector, because that was my first instinct, even before I read the description, but after reading the description, I believe I could be wrong & it could be both, or just the downloader. I really don't know lol.

I am not sure now. If one of them must be an Aspie, than it is the downloader. Technicaly he could leave the computer for a while. The trash collector might know that downloading don't has to be as involving as the dowloader said and didn't feel like talking to him. It might look like disturbing a kid playing computer games.

The project manager's inflexibility could be related to rigid routines. It could also be a form of harassment by an NT. We don't have enough information to decide either way. I think the entire purpose of this question is to be subjective.

This question DOES measure one thing. Stereotypically, Asperger's Syndrome fits with computer work. The fact that more people answered 'trash collector' means that a lot of people voted against the stereotype. This preference overrode the fact that 'trash collector' is lower on the social hierarchy.

Why is that?

What results would we get if this question were floated to a group of NTs?

I went with trash collector on the basis that if ONE of them had to be its him but he seemed to be arguing too much. Way too much talking about it. Still his story did not change - just repeating the same thing. If it was me I would probably have tried to get around the downloader and just got very agitated.

The downloader was seeming more to try to reason on the basis of what is important to him and trying to get the collector to see it his way. Also "see what you made me do...". I find NTs are a lot more engaged in blameassigning than I am. Causes a lot of miscommunication as they interpret a lot of what I say with that mindset and completely miss my point.

The NT who made that story up to paint a picture about logic said the trash collector was the aspie because to him it was logical to get his job done than waiting on someone.

It was probably a bad example he used because it's not hard to download something, you can leave it be as it downloads. I posted it here to see what responses I get. I was right technically about aspies here would think it was the downloader who had it because he couldn't take a few seconds to pick up the trash can and put it aside so the worker can get to it. But I thought it was the downloader only who had it and the trash collector was the normal one. Maybe I didn't want to think he was the aspie.

Maybe I should post this too at a none aspie forum. I go to several of them. I can report back what results I got. Thanks for the idea.

The point was that the guy collecting the trash couldn't see the overall picture. That the complicated computer work was obviously more important than taking out the trash at the moment. And the guy doing the computer work even asked nicely and provided a solution ("Please wait a few moments and I'll be done & I'll get out of your way"), yet the trash guy just persisted, probably annoying and alienating his co-worker. In a way this relates to the "details or overall picture" thread. He could see the detail ("I was told to take out the trash"), he couldn't see the overall picture (That the computer work was more important and more likely to get f****d up if interupted at a critical time).

JMO. Interesting to see how different nuerotypes see the story.

The trash guy. The guy downloading something isn't being strange at all.

Okay I asked my husband this question. I read the story to him and he said the trash collector. I posted this at the other forum that isn't an aspie forum even though there are lot of aspies there too. But there are also none aspies there and I wanted to see their results and what they say to it. The majority voted the trash collector.

I still think it is neither the trash collector or the downloader, but the download itself. It appears stereotypical, inflexible and probably lacks theory of mind. I expect if some of its details were wrong it would dysfunction or cease to function despite the overall utility of the bigger picture.

Definately the download.

I think there is a signal difference between the two presented cases of inflexibility.

In the case of the collector, the task is simple, and readily amenable to delay. The boss' instruction to, "do it now," is metaphorical, but is being interpreted literally.

In the case of the downloader, the task might be more complex, and might require that person's focussed attention, for some reason. (We aren't really provided with insight into the degree to which the downloader's attention to the task is truly required).

But the real distinction, in my view, is that the collector makes no acknowledgement of the downloader's task, or the downloader's needs with respect to completing the task. On the other hand, the downloader acknowledges the collector's task, and proposes a solution that will allow the collector to complete the task--albeit after a delay. That strikes me as an NT trait that Aspies do not typically possess, and therefore have to learn.

I wasn't being sarcastic. You said the garbage collector was being literal. So if "Do it now" doesn't mean do it now, what did his boss mean when he said it?
