what exactly are weighted blankets? I know they are used in autism therapy, but what are they? and how are they used?

As the name suggests, they are blankets that weigh more than usual. Think of it as a quilted comforter that has beads inside rather than goose down. They're used just like a regular blanket. The added weight increases proprioception (awareness of your body in space) and helps reduce "restless leg syndrome" and the urge to stim or to toss-and-turn when trying to go to sleep.

Do any of you all enjoy those lead-vest type covers that the dentist puts on you when an X-ray is done? I LOVE those things! Most people complain about how confining they are, and how heavy they are. I can't wait for that part of a dental exam to come up. One time, I asked the Dental assistant to just leave it on me after the X-ray is done. She left it on there through most of the cleaning, but then had to take it off when another patient neeed it for an X-ray. The nice thing about these too is they are a bit warm. I'm always cold, so the added warmpth is very comfortable too.

I love those lead vests at the dentist too. I think I mentioned it in another post one time. You actually asked to keep it on? I always think about doing that but I've never been brave to ask - worried about being seen as weird, and also the dental assistant is kinda scary, not the most pleasant person to interact with. Maybe someday I'll give it a try.
