I think this image summarizes my thoughts on this whole month quite nicely:

Image

Notice that I didn't specifically fit 'autism speaks' in there, just because there are a whole host of groups and things that promote such ignorance. Plus, I think the group is covered by basically every circle in the diagram except the little pink one. :)

Also, why is everyone so jazzed up about blue? WTF does blue have to do with autism? Is somebody donating money to the cause or something if a certain amount of people and buildings have blue on them? :?:

It actually was the result of a UN Resolution, most likely lobbied by Autism Speaks (who seems to run the Autism Awareness Day website).

I don't get the blue thing, either. It's Friday and tons of people wear blue jeans, or even blue shirts with blue jeans without trying to make a statement. I mean, if you want to make a statement, wear neon green.

I'm wearing sage green and black today. Autism is not a disease. Autism Speaks can go to Hell! Indeed.

Happy One Year Anniversary Aimless! :sunny:

Maybe it isn't a disease for you and many others with on the autistic spectrum.

While I wouldn't define it as a "disease" either in my case....it certainly is a DISABILITY and a rather profound one where i'm concerned.

I think it's NT think. Let's do something social, together, to raise autism awareness. Like, the motive is really solidarity.

I do think blue is an odd choice of color. Especially without specifying what kind of blue. It's such an ordinary, common color for clothing.

For me autism awareness month gives me the opportunity to perseverate on two of my special interests, and that's my kids, and autism spectrum disorders without looking like I'm going way over the top. I haven't done anything in my blog yet, but my facebook page has lots on it. It's also a good opportunity to share videos, links, and other pieces of info that just might change some parents minds about how they view autism, again without looking like you're shoving info down their throat.

I also disclosed of about my AS to a few people yesterday when the subject of autism awareness day was brought up. That was my opening, and I went ahead, and took it. My councilor told me it was in my best interest to tell certain people, but I couldn't think of a way to bring it up. Autism just isn't an everyday conversation.

I have to admit though, I'm tired of seeing all of the Autism Speaks, and support Dr. Wakefield junk that many of the parents I know are passing around.

i am currently wearing blue even though I generally hate wearing the color blue, and don't wanna support anything that was invented by Autism Speaks...
Couldn't we co-opt this day, since it already exists and make it an Autism Pride day?

This also happens to be the day that one of my favorite bands is playing and their shirt happens to be blue...

but I don't want to deliberately NOT wear blue...as a protest of the people who think that autism is a disease...Especially since I wanna wear my pong shirt tonight...

I put on my Facebook status today: Since today is World Autism Awareness Day, I'd like to tell Autism Speaks to go get sodomized with a rusty chisel.

I'm wearing blue, and so is my family, because I support autism awareness. It's not about Autism Speaks Light It Up Blue Campaign, which is about getting money, as it always is with them.

Look, autism awareness can be negative, or positive. I'm taking this opportunity to spread postive, realistic awareness that let's other people see just how jacked organizations like Autism Speaks, SafeMinds, Cure Autism Now, ect.. is. That we DON'T feel, and think the way they say we do, and that we don't want a cure. We want respect, and acceptance. We can sit here and complain about Autism Speaks to each other, and agree that we hate them, but it's preaching to the choir.
