Being "smart" at someone else's expense -- something only an "ass" would do.
to those that deserve it

And what shall we call the one who presumes to decide that?

I don't see how people can get so angry at these kinds of replies that they have to drop a pissed off "smart ass!" on you. Most of the time I find these "smart ass" jokes, even if they're played on me, to be funny. It's not as though the person is blatantly trying to agitate you, it's just playfulness. :)

Us smartasses make the world interesting. The people that don't get it are the dumbasses.

I was talking about a book with my psychologist and he said he liked the author too because he was a solid author. Then I said that he was not solid he was 70% liquid. . But I attribute that answer because I´m too literal.

Pointing out the obvious to someone who just doesn't "GET IT" is being a SMART-ASS????

I've tried to point some things out at work that are dysfunctional now because of technology and a shift in understanding among similar institutions in how to arrange policies and procedures. But the only thing others can see is that they think I'm trying to engage in a game of oneupmanship or trying to undermine their authority.

Also, I do not fall into groupthink just to avoid embarrassing or angering other members of the group.

Oh god, I'm such a smartass. I don't even realize it most of the time...
I have a reputation among my friends for being the "know-it-all" (lovingly, of course ;)).
I'm the type who will pipe in on a conversation to correct a fact or assumption, and then go on and on about why I'm right and they're wrong hahaha.
My mom always got on my case for "provoking unnecessary arguments." And of course, being a smartass, I would respond that it's not an argument, I was simply correcting her, and if she wants to argue with me about it then it's her fault.

I had a friend who said to me one time, "Why do YOU always have to be RIGHT?"

He asked that just because he would say things that were incorrect and try to pass it off as the truth when I knew it wasn't. I didn't want him to go elsewhere with it and make an ARSE of himself, so I would try to bring it up tactfully, but you just CAN'T tell some people some things.

Exactly! For the most part, I correct people just because I can't stand to hear incorrect information if I know the real side of things, but the reason I correct people in class is because I don't want them to keep on believing something wrong and then fail the class. :(
