I was dx schizoaffective, among other things, due to the manifestation of my werewolf to explain my rage, many years ago.

I was dx AS 4 months ago. The schizoaffective has been put in to the closet, despite the fact that my werewolf still sleeps at my feet, the sleep of the content. I have even written stories about him.

Please get this clarified by a psychiatrist before the talk of anti-psychotics comes up. Was on them for years for no reason.

Take very good care. Please do not dx yourself, and if it is schizotypal, there is much better treatments these days than what I had.

WOW, carltcwc...WE got the SAME SCORE!

Okay...so what does it all MEAN?!?!

I think religious and spiritual beliefs need to be ruled out of the Odd Thinking and Magical Beliefs before making a judgment on THAT!

See? Prayer fits the definition of "magical thinking". People pray over a sick person, with the belief (or hope at least) that the person will get better. So therefore, all people who pray with that kind of belief or intent would be classified by the atheistic psychiatrist as being Schizotypal.

Schizotypal involves a lot of cultural symptoms like religion for example. I think wiki says something about beliefs that deviate form the norm of the society/culture group so it's possible that someone who's religious & is in an area where people are not religious could be seen as having Schizotypal disorder. I live in a area with a lot of Catholics so if I wer to believe that I'm talking to god; no doc would have a problem with it but if I wer to believe that I was talking to space-aliens; that is a disorder. If I wer to see an angel in a dream; that would be fine but if I wer to see a bright lite in my room; dos could think I'm dangerous.

I also think AS with psychotic depression could resemble a lot of the Schizotypal symptoms

A lot of the symptoms of Aspergers and Schizotypal overlap. The "magical thinking" and unusual perceptual expierances could indicate a schizo spectrum disorder. The other symptoms overlap with many other things. I would guess if you dont have excessive unusual experiences you might have something else instead. Also if you have motor skill delay, trouble understanding social cues, and obsessive intrests it could be an autism spectrum disorder. Most of the other symptoms overlap. It is also not unusual for someone to have both but this is easier to determine if you have signifiant symptoms in the things I mentioned.

My therapist referred me to a psychiatrist and within 1 hour that Doctor concluded that I was Schizotypal. To me it came across as being because I'm religious. Her questions focused on things like "Do you feel like God has a calling on your life?" "does God communicate his instructions to you?" "do you talk to God?" She said that she didn't feel qualified to diagnose Apsperger's in adults. (So making the schizotypal diagnosis was an easy option for her.)

With questions like that, they would conclude that all Orthodox Jews and most Christians are schizotypal. My therapist is religious and he agreed with me that the DSM on schizotypal can be misapplied to include ordinary religious people. I said that if this test was run on the population of 100 years ago, virtually everyone would be schizotypal by today's standards.

Anyway, my therapist is trying to get another referral to some outside specialists to do a differential diagnosis for schizotypal versus Asperger's.

My therapist said that being a Christian would be maladaptive for me. On the contrary it's been the best thing for me.
