The plateau of Costa Rica. It is perfect weather wise. Even during raining season it would only rain for a couple of hours in the morning, and then would be sunny in the afternoon. Everyone is friendly, and they'll assume that you are weird because you are a foreigner, rather than everyone thinking you're weird because you're autistic. I spent four months in Cartago, Costa Rica, and would love to go back. I was always surrounded by children and dogs, but that didn't bother me at all.

Well, I hate the noise of the city, but I think the countryside or small town is worse. I don't have a car right now (and even when I did I hated driving), so I like that I can walk to the grocery store. It's pretty anonymous, and I appreciate that. If I owned a decent amount of land, I would move out into the country because I really want a garden. But I'm stuck as a renter for now, so I'll take city life.

You sound a lot like me. I've wanted to move out to the country on my own piece of land since I was in my teen years but if you don't inherit it, something like that takes money so here I am, almost thirty years later, still with the dream unrealized.

But maybe . . . . I've learned to drive now, and I'm soon (three more years) to graduate school and (hopefully) get a real job and maybe a plot of land is still in my future. I'm sad, though, because one thing I wanted was an orchard and those take many years to get established and if I'd been able to plant one back when the dream first began, it would be a beautiful, mature, providing orchard by now. I just hope I get my orchard before I'm too old and infirm to pick fruit any more.

The worst place I've lived was when I shared a 1 bedroom apartment with some guy I hadn't previously met. He turned the living room into his bedroom and I had the actual bedroom. We also had two cats each so there were a lot of us crammed into a small apartment. I stayed in my room almost all the time and he seemed to take offense at that - but where else was I supposed to go?

I loved living in the city because it was so anonymous. I got into the habit of wearing headphones everywhere to try and combat the noise. The worst was during the world cup, I lived right in the middle of the part of town that housed the winners and I thought I was going to go crazy with all the hullabaloo that came when their team won.

Right now I'm in a medium sized college city where I can remain relatively anonymous, with less noise than the big city I lived in before. I don't think I could do a small town, I don't want people to know me. I like anonymity.

That sounds really nice! I had assumed Costa Rica would be steamingly hot and humid and so had generally avoided the thought of going there. The staple of my diet is fruit, though, so it would make sense for me to live someplace more tropical than I do. Costa Rica is one of the more stable and peaceful places to go in Latin America, too. (I'm a grad student in political science, specializing in Latin American issues so I've wanted to visit Latin America but am fearful of ending up in the middle of a revolution or massive drug deal and getting killed due to my general cluelessness and my brilliant ability to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.)

I used to do that, but after a few incidents, I got too paranoid to keep blocking out sound. It makes it too easy for others to screw with you. And some will take advantage of that.

San Francisco. There are more hidden social rules there than any city I've ever been to. You can go years thinking you have friends there only to find out they never liked you but didn't wanna be "rude" by letting you know. It's cliquey beyond belief. If you aren't good at taking public transportation you will also be ruined there. For a city claiming to be open minded it's a bit of a joke. It is open minded to poltically correct and socially acceptable artsy types. It doesn't matter how good an artist you are there though... say the wrong thing and you're gone.

I think it would depend on the individual Aspie but I'm going to say New Orleans. I live about an hour away from there & it is a party city. The have a holiday to mark the begging of Lint(MardieGras) so they can get drunk & toss junk in order to tone their partying down for one month. N.O. has a high crime rate, We have hurricane scares every year, it's extremely hot & humid all summer long & during the winter the temperature alternates between being very cold & being very hot. We have the AC or heater running all winter & the AC on all summer(we do not have comfortable temperature like during fall & spring). There's lots of cajun food here & some Aspies(not me) do have issues with spices. There is also very little media awareness of autism here; lots of people think it means mental retardation. Our state has been in a huge finical crises so there is no money for public services like health care or other mental services. The only way to get public mental help here is if you have a drug or alcohol addition, a failed suicide attempt or have a criminal record & are a threat to others. A few years ago a guy was actually advised by his lawyer to make bomb threats so he could quality for mental help; guy was sent to prison instead of getting mental help. The people in Louisiana also tend to have sinus problems do to sugar cane burning, pollution from factories ect. Plus some people here are also extremely intolerate. if you are a guy who hates sports(like foot-ball), & are not into hunting & fishing; people assume something is wrong with you(they may think your gay & some people hate gays)

I seriously want to move out of this place

I agree San Francisco makes too big a deal on its open-mindedness. I have been there twice, and while I love the Bay Area, I think the city is a bit of a dissapointment. It's certainly not livable. It's now more expensive than Midtown Manhattan, yet doesn't have the same economic opportunity.
I spent more time in Silicon Valley. Now that's a gorgeous place, though still pricey.

If you're an aspie who doesn't drive, then Arlington, Texas would probably be the worst place for you to live. It's the largest city in the world without public transportation, and it's definitely not a pedestrian-friendly city.

Is it anything like King Of The Hill :?: Hank seems to have some AS characteristics(obsessive interest, very direct, some OCD characteristics, doen't understand typical social things, very naive, not comfortable with affection or emotions). If it's like that; I'd consider mite moving there

For me it was NYC. I lived there for 10 years, and was overstimulated almost the whole time. Toward the end I informed my husband I was leaving and he could come with me if he wanted.

The show takes places in a town called Arlen, which I'm pretty sure is fictional. I'm talking about the city of Arlington. The fictional town of Arlen seems to be not very big and easy to get around; whereas Arlington has a population of over 300,000 and I believe is considered to be the entertainment capital of Texas. If you're an aspie and you do not drive, then Arlington would be a nightmare of a city for you. Of course, we do have a transportation system for the disabled called the Handitran, but I have yet to ride on it so I couldn't tell you if it's reliable or not.

My boss's parents live in Houston. They tell me that it's more important in Texas to have a car than to have legs. I know most parts of the US are like that, but thankfully, I don't think I'll live in one of those places.

I've actually never been to Houston, so I wouldn't know.

Do you drive? If you do, then you shouldn't have any problems getting around. If you don't drive, then avoid Arlington at all costs.

I can drive, but prefer not to. It's not even that I'm a bad driver, but I like the freedom to walk around. Besides, why spend ~$15/day on gasoline and depreciation (not including parking costs) when I can spend just $3/day taking a train?

Got ya. It would of been nice if I could move next to Hank & Peggy & change my name to Bill
I live in a small unheard of town called Schriever & there's no public transportation here either. All the stores & businesses are over 15miles away in other towns/cities. Not being able to drive is major problem for me
