I like Jack O´ Neil from Stargate SG-1 and also Dr. McKay from Stargate: Atlantis. And also I base my career on the character Dr. McKay. LOL. :)

You mean they aren't looking now?! 8O

Why not for crying out loud?!

I bet it's right under Atlantis. :chin:

BTW: I don't recall ever obsessing over any fictional character. I was more into the concepts of some old classic Sci-Fi.

2001, a Space Odyssey was one for a while. Kubrick did an awesome job on the movie, until the end, where it totally fell apart. The vast majority of people who saw it but never read the book never understood the ending. I'd love to see that redone without changing anything but the end. That is one place I can see CG used to do a far better job of it.

Another, that's far more relevant for Wrong Planet, is the Foundation Trilogy by Isaac Asimov.

SPOILER ALERT!! !!
If you ever plan to read the books, DO NOT read the following!! !

At the end of the book, a group of people (basically psychologist types, but a bit more complicated than that), are revealed to have been "running the show" for quite some time. They had evolved to the point of spoken work no longer being necessary. They had learned to communicate via facial expressions and body language alone!

How's THAT for a planet we might not want to live on?!

I went through a "Lord of the Rings" phase during which I was quite capable of spouting Quenya, creation legends, and hobbit family trees at anyone who cared to listen.

What you describe is very much like what my AS son does. He's 12 now, and his biggest "special interest" is the Warcraft and Starcraft worlds (not the MMOG, World of Warcraft, though). He's very much into all those little details, like you described. Unfortunately, I struggle to find it interesting, so having to listen to him talking about it is very draining. I wish he were interested in the Harry Potter world. That's my thing!

I've noticed that throughout his life, when he gets a special interest/obsession, it's always some kind of fictitious world. When he was younger it was mostly Bionicle, but several other things as well.

I believe "Lord of the Rings" would be right up his alley. So far, he hasn't wanted to read it, though.

I'd be interested to hear if this type of special interest has been useful for you, or something you've been able to integrate into your adult life. I sometimes worry about my son, because he can get so obsessed about whatever current "world" he's involved with, that he doesn't want much to do with the "real" world. That's just fine until you need to hold down a job and pay the rent.

I always get intensely attached to certain characters. Some of my long-term obsessions: The Doctor from Doctor Who, Captain Jack Harkness from Doctor Who and Torchwood, Brian Kinney from Queer As Folk, Chandler from Friends, Rimmer from Red Dwarf, and as someone else already mentioned, Eric from True Blood. Also, all of the characters from LOTR. And I mean all of them. Good, bad, major, minor, all of them. I love that fictional world.

I won't even say the character because you could seriously find me IRL if I did. XD;; But yes. I think it was about 6 years. ooooooooomg. 6 pretty epic years.
I kind of want it back, but, uh... after a while things like that tend to give REAL people the impression that you're insane. (And I think probably I was, for a while.)

Thanks everyone. *sigh of relief* You are all making me feel better. I don't know anyone in RL who obsesses like I do, and it's nice to know you are out there...somewhere. :)

It's not an obsession, but it's hard to get out of my head.

I was obsessed with Austin Powers, from 1997, until 2006. I was obsessed with Sid, from 2007 to 2009. All that wasted time that I could have been myself, enjoying my music.

Yes, I was absolutely OBSESSED with all of the characters from the movie "Willow" as a child. I actually wrote their names in different colors inside my pencil box, like the way a normal girl would write her crush's name

I think maybe anybody who writes for fun has characters living in their head. How else are you going to write about them clearly enough to let the reader meet them properly?

Sometimes when I'm bored, I'll have my original characters have conversations with one another (or original characters interacting with characters from various franchises). I used to do this with toys when I was a child, but these days I realize toys are pretty much unnecessary.

For a big chunk of my life, I was convinced that I was the only person on the planet who developed obsessions with fictional characters. I've had numerous obsessions of this nature over the years. It's difficult to determine time frames, as some of them have been on again/ off again type deals.
As a child, I went through obsessions with characters such as little orphan Annie, from the movie adaptation, and Ariel from the Disney adaptation of The Little Mermaid.
As a teenager, I went through an obsession with Charlie Gordon from Flowers for Algernon. I've been obsessed with Roger Davis from RENT, which is weird, as I have a lot more in common with Mark Cohen than I do with Roger.
I've had an obsession with Colin Craven from the original book version of The Secret Garden, which has been on again/ off again for years. The same goes for my obsession with Remus Lupin from Harry Potter.
I've gone through obsessions with other fictional characters over the years, some from more obscure works of fiction. I do become highly interested in the worlds these characters inhabit, though my primary focus tends to be these particular characters.

I get obsessed easily. Imagine, I'm obsessed with Aladdin. I've always wanted to go on a date on a magic carpet ride. And of course, I love the fact that he wears a cape. I have a thing for guys in capes.

Then, let's see, I also love Brock. I was devastated when he left the show at the begining of the orange islands. I hated Tracey just for that reason.

And of course, I am also obsessed with Batman. Both the original and beyond.

And I don't know if this counts, but I also like characters done by real actors. Most especially the pirates, Juan del Diablo(the one done by Palomo on the 93, the 09 version is a disgrace and an insult to the story), and el Antillano.
