When your obsession ends

My distaste for the prequel nonsense disillusioned me and I walked away from Star Wars for a few years. In the intervening time I became obsessed with the Mafia, and a video game called "The Elder Scrolls: Morrowind." Morrowind came out in 2002 and it replaced my Mafia interest, and I still play Morrowind many hours a week to this day. However, my Star Wars interest has also returned in the past year, I just choose to ignore anything prequel-related and focus on the original trilogy. Star Wars and Morrowind are fighting for dominance of my thoughts, and it's about an even fight right now. Though I must say I've never skipped school or work to come home and watch Star Wars, though I have done so to play Morrowind.
Awesome! Morrowind is my all time favorite game. I got it for the computer on a whim when it first came out, played it for months and months, then got the expansions when they came out. Eventually my PC broke and I replaced it with a Mac, so then I had to buy an X-Box and Morrowind GOTY edition so I could still play it. I beat the game tons of times over, but I haven't played Morrowind in a while now.
However, I recently started playing the Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, with all it's expansions, and while it doesn't draw me in as much as Morrowind did it is still fun to play.
And I definitely second your comments about Star Wars as well, though I did like Darth Maul, but otherwise the prequels were a bunch of drek. To top it off Lucas won't let the damn prequels go, with the stupid Clone Wars cartoon they have now. I wish he'd move on to another era.

This should bring back some memories for you.

"Wake up. Stand up. There you go. What's your name?
Well, not even last night's storm could wake you. I heard them say we've reached Morrowind, I'm sure they'll let us go. Quiet, here comes the guard."
"This is where you get off. Come with me!
Now get yourself up on deck, and let's keep this as civil as possible."
"This is where they want you. Head down to the docks and they'll show you to the census office."
"You've finally arrived, but our records don't show from where... Interesting, I'm sure you'll fit right in."
"Continue through to the next building and talk to Sellus Gravius."
"Ah yes, we've been expecting you. You'll have to be recorded before you're officially released. There are a few ways we can go about this, and the choice is yours... Interesting. Now before I stamp these papers, make sure this information is correct. Take your papers to the captain to finish your release."
As a kid I could recite the entire Star Wars trilogy dialogue by heart. Nowadays I can mostly only remember the Darth Vader parts. I kind of have an obsessive fascination with Vader.

For me, I have a residual interest in it still. My interests aren't exactly fleeting so I usually have something physical to remember them by and thus they don't vanish entierly. I agree when it was said that they cycle in and out but don't vanish. For me this is especially true and I tend to refind particular intersts I've lost in some respect.
I do have more minor interest, but I would in no way consider them obsessions. That's reserved for very few areas of my life and it is clear to anyone else what they are.
Ah Morrowind. I tend to get engrossed in Video Games easily and that was one of them a long while back. I remember playing until I had near godlike powers. I haven't played it in years though. My XBox broke awhile back and I don't have the extra money to get myself a new one.
When I can feel an obsession coming to an end (when it stops being fun and starts being boring), I feel very sad and I try to make myself get enthusiastic about it again, to no avail. Then I come to a point where I acknowledge that it's coming to an end. When I finally decide to completely "let go" of it, I experience a relatively minor grieving process over the obsession, which can last anywhere from a day to a week. Then I feel very empty, restless and agitated while I'm on the hunt for a new obsession.
When I finally find one, I experience intense joy and excitement. My enthusiasm for the new obsession lasts anywhere from a couple of months to a couple of years, after which I start feeling neutral, then eventually bored. And then the cycle repeats itself.
I tend to experience strong feelings of nostalgia when thinking about obsessions I had years ago. The obsessions that make me feel the most nostalgic are the ones I had as a preteen/young teenager. I don't remember most of the ones from my childhood very well, and I'm still bored with the ones I had from my mid to late teens.

Did you ever play any of the old Jedi Knight PC games? That seems to have become the Star Wars Force Unleashed franchise.

Nerdily enough, I made up my own class for my Morrowind characters: Archaeologist. I am like the Wood Elf Indiana Jones. Just ask Torasa Aram at the Mournhold Museum of Artifacts.
I played some Dark Forces and some Jedi Knight II, but it's been so many years I hardly remember them at all. I'm looking forward to the new SW MMO due out next year, I think.

Some of my obsessions end when a new obsession starts & take their place so I don't really notice or care that the old one is fading. Other times thou I start noticing an obsession is getting boring so I try to focus on other things more & my interest sometimes comes back or I find something else to fill the void eventually. I think one of the many rezones I want a relationship is because she will be an obsession that will keep things intresting as long as she stays with me that is

That is neat. I used to take up residence in Tel Fyr and claim it as my own. I played most of the Jedi Knight games, and Dark Forces. I haven't looked into the new SW MMO much, but I'll probably check it out when it comes closer to being released.

My subinterests are part of a mosaic, but the main interest I have had for going on 43 years. The subinterests are tangental to the main one. I never lose them, but the focus changes. If the interest is broad enough, it will last, and in my case, has lasted.

Used to have this thing for road maps back as a kid, I would create my own complete with all the details, that passed away. Then I became obsessed with game design, started creating levels and schematics on paper completely clueless as to how to apply that information to a working demo, that passed away. Etched out custom blueprints, that passed away. When any of those ended, another one came my way and took up my time. I just give up on it and go on to the next, nothing more.
Then I met my best friend, her name was BASIC. Old IBM machine, never gave me any lip, always did what I told. To this day I'm still obsessed with programming and code, and as a result have gotten into computing in general.

I can't say any of mine have "ended". My longest-running interest is vintage electronics (collecting/repairing old TV sets and radios). That interest led to my first career (TV & VCR repair technician), which lasted over 20 years.) I still have the interest, and I still occasionally buy, repair, or sell old TV sets, but it's not #1 anymore. All of my other special interests have continued to date from inception. It's fair to say that I do find special interests more exciting at the beginning, but none has faded out altogether.
