I have artistic pretensions so I feel a compulsion to write as neatly as possible. I like writing in all capitals.

I'm pretty sure I have Dysgraphia - I get pain in my right hand every time I write something on a piece of paper. When I was a kid, my writing was pretty much illegible. Starting in middle school, I endeavoured for the rest of my school years to improve my handwriting, especially with cursive in signing my name. My handwriting has improved greatly since then. It looks quite neat these days if I write it slowly, but the letters and stuff don't look the same after writing a couple lines. Also, it's not written straight. It gradually looks worse every line I write.

My signature is a work of art now though. Practice makes 'close to' perfect.

Oh God... I hate pencils with a passion - especially those that are not the mechanical ones. I MUST have a pen. End of discussion!

I've lost count on how many times I've chewed on the end of a pen to the point that ink actually leaks out of that end. LOL!

In all of my classes which graded on handwriting, it was the only bad grade I was given. Many of my written assignments received negative comments about my handwriting. The funny thing is that I was excellent at drawing. I would feel compelled to grip the pencil tightly and press down on the paper too hard.

I have terrible handwriting... but I do love the sensation of writing and love pens so I do write quite a bit. Never knew this was an AS thing 8O
Though, I knew one guy who I strongly suspect was an aspie and he had amazingly neat and precise handwriting.

I've been ambidextrous since I picked up my first pencil, and I'm quite the artist - yet my handwriting is like taken straight out of a horror movie. When I put my mind to it, it's average at best - but as I keep writing it becomes messy. Sometimes I even have a hard time reading my own papers. On the good side, I write extremely fast. In highschool I used to write 8-12 handwritten pages on 2 hour tests. Luckily grades are based on content rather than handwriting, but I've had teachers who wanted to give a lower grade because of it.

I'm good on the keyboard, but I'm really bad, with a pen.

I've always had horrible handwriting & horrible fine motor skills(except for video-games) but I used to think it was related to dyslexia & possibly ADHD. I went to a school for dyslexia from middle of 6th true 8th grade & a lot of the students also had bad handwriting. The dyslexic students I knew in high-school also seemed to have more of those problems. When i was about 19/20; I got diagnosed as having "Essential Tremors" My hands sometimes shake when I'm doing things with fine motor skills & things like stress can aggravate it a lot. Bad handwriting & poor motor-skills are quite common with it. Also things like mental meds can really affect it(I think the meds made mine worse long term). I think substances in general can potentially cause problems with tremors or motor skills. Anti-psychotics & ADHD meds list that in the side-effects on the commercials but anti-depressants & anti-anxiety meds can also cause problems. Also illegal substances & alcohol can also cause major problems with motor skills & tremors; even caffeine can potentially cause problems. Soda does not seem to affect me like that but I never drink coffee

I write slower than average person, but it looks pretty, I mean it's all in order and neat. No chaos in my notebooks.

My fourth grade teacher spent a couple weeks working on my hand writing skills. I wrote in the smallest font my pencil could produce. She got me writing larger and more clearly but I never really got cursive either, My hand writing is not pretty but you do not need a magnifying glass to read it. I think my constant spelling mistakes adds a little humor for the reader of my run on sentances. :P

Hmm, interesting responses. I guess dysgraphia does not necessarily come with AS, then. Many of you say that you cannot do cursive. I've posted samples of my handwriting in the original post... I've been told that my cursive is extremely neat.

Hi, I have handwriting issues too. My writing is never consistent. I may start a paragraph in one size and finish off in another size. This is likely to happen if I had paused halfway to think. I print most of the time these days but some letters are formed like a cursive and this depends on the speed of writing. The tripod grip does not work for me. it makes me tired quickly. The way I grip the pen is very firm and I also write heavily. Experts can easily read what I wrote on a previous page by reading the notepad I leave behind. But an inexperienced expert may wonder if I was the sole writer because the writing is so inconsistent.

I recently saw a special pen displayed at a shop window. It is a short pen with a ring at the end of the barrel. I think the whole idea of this pen is to force the user to use the tripod grip. I had wanted to buy it to give it a try but the short barrel gave me the impression that it will run out of ink sooner than other pens and I am also pretty particular with the kind of inks in the pens I use. I prefer gel inks that flows smoothly.

The best writing tool for me is still the computer. I can type fairly fast and I can pick whichever font I fancy but most importantly, the outcome of the writing is always consistent. :D

OMG, handwriting....I went to catholic elementary school and the nuns never got tired of using the ruler because my handwriting was so bad...:( Worse than that was the time in 3rd grade (exceptionally mean nun)they wouldn't let me write my own Mother's day card because my handwriting sucked so bad and they let this girl I absolutely *HATED* because she was Miss Perfect write it for me. I took the card and ripped it up and bought one for my mother that year.

Ugh...

My handwriting is pretty bad. I really think it is because of being ambedextrous
My handwriting is poor with both hands I have read some sudies that say ambedextarity could
be the brain compansating for brain damage
