Interesting thread.

I dont think I really have special interests. For me it is like they are a mild, background thing, stuff I read about. I dont really perceive myself haviing special intersts but I find when I am with people socially I say lots of things about plants, animals, politics, the world, and people look at me funny, especially when I take a big interest in a tree growing in someones garden. The thing is I think I actually must have special interests but I am blind to them, they are just things to think about.

I do this too, if I really like someone. You wouldn't believe the stuff you can find online if you're smart enough.

Wow, I REALLY sound like a stalker.

I don't know if I have Aspergers. I'm leaning towards "no" based on my self-diagnosis test scores in my signature, and based on my lacking a narrow obsessive interest in anything and lack of stimming.

I told my wife that I had tested 29 on a test in which Aspergers was suspect if one tested 32 and above and that since I didn't score 32 I was "100% normal." She laughed. She also laughed when I told her that I had no weird interests and reminded me that I'm fascinated by tiny houses and islands. While that might be weird, I don't think my interest in small houses or islands is nearly as obsessive as some of the interests I read about on this board.

When my life is busy and stressful (which is the case more and more as I get older) I find my mind can't focus on any special interests. Special interests come when I'm relaxed and I have time and energy to pursue them.

I don't have special interests that are consistent, and most of the time i don't have speical interests at all.

According to this thread, AS without special interests is NLD.
I have special interests, but they don't interfere very strongly with my life. As in, I can still go along with other people's interests in a dialogue without talking about mine non-stop. I can also tolerate doing schoolwork that does not relate to my special interests.

There were a few obscure celebrities who I did this with. It never occurred to me that it was part of my AS or whatever I have. I thought it was just my personality. The infatuation seemed to crop up whenever I was going through a rough time in my life, like I wanted to be more like them, but I guess all I did was glorify them. I still do in a way, but I don't keep looking up stuff on the net- it stays in my head, where I just keep reminding myself it's a fantasy and I have to keep it in check.

I used to have special interests that I would obsess about and talk about all the time when I was a kid. I'm unsure whether or not I still have special interest/s, or if I have outgrown them. I do have a wide range of interests and a wider range of topics I talk about now in days, but I still have obsessive thinking, which I think is referred to as perserverance of thought. Though, the obsessive thinking isn't always focused on interests of mine now in days.
My former psychologist that diagnosed me with AS thought that I have an obsession with insects. Though, my current psychologist changed the diagnosis to PDD-NOS because she thinks that I don't have a large enough special interest. Sometimes it's hard to tell when to draw the line between an intense interest and an obsession.

I realized a few days ago that my answer to this thread was actually wrong. I do have a special interest. The human condition... how people act and react. What's going through their minds when they're driven to do things. The mob mentality and social interaction in general.

I've always been a people watcher.

I have had two really strong special interests in my life (the Presidents of the US and the Beatles... the former was the strongest). Currently, though, I really don't have any... which saddens me.
