My mum has a go at me for rocking and flapping anywhere near her.

Well, I've been living with my SO only for 20 years now and he doesn't bother me about my stims. He has his own little "stims", such as rubbing his socked foot against carpet that if he continues for too long the sound of it will drive me absolutely batty. My stims are quiet with the exception of hand wringing, if that's the right term.

I rocked with gusto until about age 7 in front of my family (or their friends) until a friend of my sister's made a comment about how weird it was. This embarrassed my sister and was also the first time I felt ashamed of it, so I always hid in my room to do it after that. My brother looked down at me for it, and would sometimes barge into my room and catch me on purpose just so he could sneer at me. God, I hated that.

My father continually got at me for feeling/picking at my face. Still does when I see him, which isn't very often.

I had to stop rocking by my early 30's for spinal health reasons. My anxiety went up significantly since then. It's been gradually replaced by pacing and flapping, without intent. Which reminds me, sometimes my pacing does get to my SO if he's around. Mostly I save the intense stimming for when I'm alone. Flapping and holding my hands in a weird position tend to just happen without thinking. I have to hold one hand down with the other, vice them between my knees or sit on them sometimes.

Btw, it's my extreme stimming that led me to my initial connection with autistics, long before I knew of the spectrum. Thinking back on my childhood back in the 70's, I don't know how it didn't get me a visit to a shrink. But then I remember what my mom's like - she's in her own world (as am I), often oblivious or unconcerned with things other mom's would freak over. (She hated noise though, especially shrieking or fighting, but I was pretty quiet outside of my music, which she didn't mind so much.)

My family hates all my stimes and has always hated all stims I had. Currently, my main stim is twirling my hair, and they can't stand it. My boyfriend doesn't mind though.

My parents find my knee bouncing annoying when I do it at the dinner table.

OMG! someone bought one of those for me too. I LOVE IT! LOL Mine has gold sparkles though and is abit bigger than your hand can hold. My niece had one and I was non-stop playing with it at her 1st birthday party so my sis in law's husband's mom got one for me too. LOL I was teased of course.

Anything that involves squeaking, or clicking things. My dad doesn't like it when I rock on chairs because I always end up breaking them!

My mother doesn't like it when I hit my head or bang my head against the wall. Understandable, I suppose.

The latter makes me feel good when I'm out and overwhelmed, and the former is something I just do out of the blue without any thought.

My son does this thing where he claps his hands real fast and then makes loud noises out of the blue. It is driving my husband (who I think may have AS tendencies) CRAZY!! !! My son flaps his hands alot and shakes his head from side to side mostly when he listens to music. I hope my son can stop the clapping and loud noises for the sanity of our family, and also, so that the school won't want to keep placing him in special education classes. I think my son is very intelligent, but he just can't stop with his loud outbursting!! ! He is only 5 though. I am hoping this one will stop. BTW, my son has an excellent voice, so I hope he will be a singer one day!

Slapping my hands against different things, ie tables, my legs. I don't do it much, but its cathartic.

Yeah, he got it for me because someone else got one for their birthday and I couldn't look away from it whenever she made the sparkles move around
