Processing speed and Aspies without ADHD.

A study at the University of Iowa found that processing speed (and working memory) was lower for gifted students with autism spectrum disorder.

odd I think I have really low processing speed but really high working memory per the last 2 WAIS's (IQ tests) I have taken. well I do information chunk for what I think are the working memory parts. Actually 2 in the first sentence should read one. I'll get the results of my most recent psychoed eval soon but predicting the same results.

Same with me. My processing speed index score was only 86 on the most recent WAIS I had It has been higher, well into the three digits, on others. My working memory index score is always at least 100 and on one test, it was 124. My Perceptual-Organizational index score this time was the lowest i've ever received at 79 The WAIS I had right before this most recent one yielded a PIQ of 111....the HIGHEST i've ever received. My VIQ/VCI scores are always at least in the superior range though. They were "very superior" on this most recent test and the last one.


So my full-scale IQ on the test before this most recent one placed me in the genius range (I think?..but close enough) at 143. This most current FSIQ has now placed me in the squarely average range at 104


I'm pretty sure my processing speed helped to lower my Peceptual-Organizational index score on this one though AND my full scale IQ score. They are now "double weighing" the value of processing speed and working memory on the WAIS-IV which was released in 2008 and this is the first time i've taken this most recent edition of WAIS.

I mean I was able to assemble all the blocks on the block design subtest correctly. It just took nearly all the alloted time for me to do so on the more complicated designs. So I apparently have serious problems with visual processing and auditory processing.

Depending on the day and time, my processing speed varies from somewhat slower to considerably slower than the people around me. The highest I've tested is in the 40th percentile for processing speed.

I scored 86 on my processing speed index on the recent WAIS-IV I took.


Do you know what that translates into in terms of percentile rank?


I know it's below the 50th percentile, but i'm not sure of the exact number.

Well, if my math works...

If we use a SD of 15, you're basically 1 standard deviation below average. An IQ of 85 puts you in the 15th percentile, and I'm guessing the subtests have the same SD/average as the full scale IQ, so that should work out fine. So yeah, like 15th percentile, I think.

i have a very low processing speed though im not sure if i had adhd i was diagnosed as adhd years before the asperger's so im not sure if it was a misdiagnosis or if i have both

a few years ago i had an iq test through high school
My full scale IQ was 90

my Verbal Comprehension (VCI) was 108
Perceptual Reasoning (PRI) was 100
Working Memory (WMI) was : 97
Processing Speed (PSI) was: 56

Keep in mind that they are now "double weighing" the value of processing speed and working memory
on the latest version of WAIS (WAIS-IV) and i'm assuming that's the one you took.

This is what the neuropsychologist who just administered my latest WAIS (IV) had to say about
all this on my report:


"Research has shown that overall the full scale IQ scores and other similar scores tend to be somewhat lower with this new measure of the WAIS primarily because of the loading of processing
speed and working memory".

yeah, i have that thing with clipping alot. It's like i hear the beginning of the sentence as white noise sometimes til somewhere mid-sentence my attention sparks at a key word or point of interest.

& i also just have trouble concentrating on what people are saying at times & especially if they talk too long, my mind wanders. Even when i'm consciously trying to follow it. Though that mainly only happens with uninteresting topics and verbal instruction.

I have ADD traits, my doctor said, just not quite enough for a real diagnosis.

& my processing speed is a little bit slower i think, yeah
