Why, exactly, is motivation such an issue?

OH! I just remembered another thing too. My mom noticed (as did I) that I lacked motivation in school because I couldn't see any direct gain from doing good. This is when she started paying me for good grades. Because with a job, my motivation is that I get paid. I like money. lol

But with college, even though I know a degree will help me obtain a good-paying job, the benefits are 4+ years in the future...
