Do I have Aspergers? Or just AvPD?
I think many people with asperger's also have traits of AvPD or SPD (myself included). But there doesn't seem as much support out there for these personality disorders as there is for autistic spectrum disorders - there are fewer websites, forums, books etc. I guess most people would rather have a diagnosis for something that they can get more support for. There's also the kudos of being associated with a condition that lots of famous people are believed to have had.
According to the DSM, SPD and AvPD are psychiatric disorders that are mutually exclusive with autism spectrum disorders, which are neurological. I think I developed SPD when I was younger as a coping mechanism for asperger's. So how can they be mutually exclusive? I can't help thinking this is an artificial restriction to try to keep things simple.
Are you sure of that? After all, a possible way of not understanding social cues is... not understanding that not understand.
What I'm saying is that I've never felt anything particularly odd or unusual about social cues, nor have I had trouble expressing myself through non-verbal means of communication.
Sometimes the only way of knowing whether you have problems with social cues or not is through asking people close to you, like family or close friends. You might think that what you're doing is okay, but they might have different views.
Also, Schizoid and AvPD are not the same as ASD - the latter is developmental, while the first two are more about malfunctioning coping strategies. I think they are mutually exclusive because it's more of a differential diagnosis between schizoid and AvPD and ASD - a clinician would be trying to find out the roots of why the behaviour existed.
You can, however, have ASD and social anxiety.

Think you're ASD? Get thee to a professional!
I'm constantly worrying about what others think of me, I am super sensitive to negative criticism/rejection, I feel that I am inadequate and greatly over-exaggerate stuff, I sometimes use fantasy a means to escape painful thoughts I might have, I'm highly self conscious about every single thing I do.
Me having AvPD is actually probably the only reason I'm here, I don't have ANY of the major symptoms that distinguish an Aspie.
Not understanding social cues - never had a problem with this whatsoever
Making friends - always had friends especially earlier in life but as my AvPD deepened I began to lose some (but I also gained a few somehow lol)
Sensory overload - never been prone to this at all
It's pretty sad that I'm here; as I actually realize the only reason I'm even wondering this is because of my AvPD and my need to feel inadequate/inept.
I fit AvPD as well, thought so for 10 years now, but can't get any answers. There seems to be a culture of not pigeonholing anyone. Maybe you have some aspie traits you don't recognise - sensory overload is one I knew I had but couldn't put a name to. Didn't think I had a special interest but my family would say I'm like an anthropologist.
