When I first began researching spectrum traits, I had no clue there were any motor impacts. I was astonished by the commentary provided by Dr. Tony Attwood on the subject, describing extremely poor handwriting and sometimes impacted coordination or balance. My handwriting caused me to get low grades in high school even when I was doing brilliant work. If I go fast, the letters run together. I'm told I start some letters at the "wrong" end. The writing tends to slide down or up instead of maintaining a straight path. I am sure mine could be viewed as childish or extremely immature, but when I try to write carefully it's made of very straight lines... I can't make it look neat with curves in it even if I wanted to (like the childish style described like examples in the learning environment). I remember being terribly frustrated with the busy work given in early gradeschool on printing and especially cursive.

There's actually a name for this - dysgraphia and apparently it's not uncommon in AS. I've had people commenting on my handwriting all my life - it's messy and I have trouble spacing it out on the page and it can be very inconsistent.

Mine isn't really "sloppy", but it changes a LOT. I've noticed when others write, theirs is always the same, nice and neat, etc. But I get bored looking at mine and it changes at least a little every time I write something. Sometimes it looks like a completely different person wrote it.

At least I can usually read what I wrote :)

I hate my handwriting so much. >_< It's so disorganized and not neat. My "signature" is incorrect cursive.

Occasionally I can't even read what I wrote down.

I feel embarrassed by my terrible handwriting. I've also been told many times that I often start my letters from the "wrong end". I can only write neatly if I print and then I end up pressing too firmly. I had an inclination to use my left hand when I was a small child, but the trend then was to encourage everyone to use their right, so perhaps that also has had some effect.

About writing in print-like style but with some joined letters: for what it's worth, research shows that this is actually the way that the fastest and most legible handwriters tend to write. (A lot of people discover or create it for that reason, even though it isn't the usual way of teaching handwriting in North America, for instance.)

There are resources for teaching this style (which is not only efficient, but useful for getting away from doing just a super-exact "clone" of textbook printing or whatever). Some of the most affordable of these resources ($2 - $5) happen to have been designed by a handwriting specialist who is an Aspie: namely, me. Here are the links to purchase them:

I have a couple of different handwriting styles and all of them look varying degrees of childish. Either I use all capital, blocky letters, which people find easieri to read but I often think it looks like the serial killer from 'Seven' 's journal, or my other style is quick, sloppy and barely legible. It doesn't help, I suppose, that I hold the pen or pencil in an extremely unusual way. This has been remarked upon on many occasions but when I try to hold a pencil like some other people what I write looks like some sort of dead language.

I have issues with most motor skills, but for some reason my handwriting is not affected. My handwriting isn't childish at all - it's actually pretty nice and readable. The only problem is when I can't stand the sound of the pencil.

Thanks everyone!

To know that others have trouble with their handwriting makes me feel a lot better.

I wonder if I can practice writing neater, with curly flourishes etc, I might at least be able to do this on birthday cards etc. That is what I would really like.

My printing is neat but slow and deliberate. I have to use block letters and I can't write fast like other people. I also have to write small or it looks all uneven and crap. I can't write on the blackboard/whiteboard without it looking ugly, sentences slanting downwards, letters all uneven sizes.

I hate cursive so I don't use it except for my signature which is more scribble than anything resembling letters.

My writing doesn't look much different than it did in third grade (terrible then, terrible now), and I'm creeping up on fifty years old now. I wrote in cursive for one year, during third grade only because I was forced to in school. I haven't used cursive since then for anything but my signature.

My typing is equally terrible and very slow. I use spell checks constantly. I'm surprised my backspace key isn't broken on every keyboard I own.

The good thing about handwriting is that you can always practice on making it different. After a while it might feel a little more natural, but if not, no biggie. I think everyone has beautiful handwriting because they are all so unique. Even the so called messy ones.

Yes, absolutely. It is like an elementary student. I also draw and paint very well, so it is a bit of a mystery why the handwriting is so terrible.

My handwritting sucks.

Teachers told my parents that it I could benefit from doing over first year of school(age 6) because according to some of them I know the subjects but they were "unable" to read my exams properly and such.

From time to time it gets better, usually if I have been feeling great lately my handwriting looks much better, otherwiseit sucks.

I have done several exercises that help you improve your writing and found most of them to be a waste of time.
