As for avatars, yes they influence me but I'm not conscious of how beyond that if someone changes it I think they're a different person.

Good point! This is kind of why I wish they'd allow animated gifs. I know some of them can be annoying, but since I like to change mine fairly regularly, and that can be confusing to other users for the reasons you mentioned, and the ones I did earlier, it would be cool to be able to just put them all into one slide show gif. If I wanted to add a new one, it could just be inserted into it. That way, I could look like all the wacky nut jobs I appear to be all at once!

I'm the opposite; I find myself feeling more at ease with people who have cheerful and/or cartoon avatars. Maybe it's because in my brain cheerful/humorous = nice, and I assume that people who have cartoons as avatars are in touch with their inner child, like I am with mine.

Yeah, it can influence perception of a person, of course. I think I'm due a change, mine really doesn't reflect me very well.

I get no influence from my own at the moment as the facial expression in it is too neutral. I like how my avatars mood/expression gives the same to my posts.

No, though I do tend to remember users by their avatars rather than names.

Question to people who are influenced by avatars: what impression does mine give? That I like iPads? :P

To me, your avatar shows that you've got a good, tactful sense of humor. It's one of the very few Bible jokes I've seen that I felt was done in decent taste, regardless of whatever your actual religious leaning (or lack thereof) may be.

My avatar does reflect on me as a person, indefinately!
ATM, as you can clearly see, my avatar is a mockery of Alice in Wonderland, and I call my avatar (as do you, probably) Adolf in Blunderland. A witty WWII joke, that, is actually one of many comics. Another mockery contains Chamberlain as that large catterpillar, from the film.

I guess I'll be the odd one. If I stumble across a new forum, I'll look at the posters' avatars to see if I can get some clue as to what kind of people I'm dealing with - for example, if all of them are impossibly thin women with improbably large bosoms, it's probably a bunch of immature males. If they all consist of Nazi imagery, it's probably a bunch of angry, immature males. And probably all white.

Beyond that, I treat avatars pretty much the same as advertising - unless it's something really different, it just doesn't register. I often don't pay any attention whatsoever to who the poster is, actually - I just read the post and respond to it. I can have a knock-down, drag out flame war with someone in one thread, and fully support their position in another one and not notice that it's the same person until well after things settle down.

I am definitely influenced by avatars.

MrXxx...I'm lovin' it because Matt's hot and so good to look at...and I'm so incredibly shallow sometimes  ...so...I'm thinking that you, too, must be hot and good to look at.

IdahoRose, your avatars always appeal to me. I love Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter and I first saw you as Alice in Wonderland. They all influence me to think that you have great taste. 8)

Asp-Z...yours right now is funny and tells me you have a good sense of humour, but also that you are technologically competent in a big way.

frag yours is unbelievably funny ...I adore it! I can't get over it and every time I see it, it makes me laugh out loud and gives me the impression that you're a lot of fun.

blue_bean, your current avatar calms me, I could look at that face forever and it makes me think you're a beautiful, peaceful person.

^ These are just some examples of how avatars influence me. However, I too, am influenced by post content as well.

My avatar? Well... that was the one out of those available which most appealed to me. I keep telling myself that I'll hunt something else down one day...just haven't got around to it yet. I'm quite content with it though.

Asp-Z, I like this avatar. I think it's funny and shows you to be clever and a little irreverent.

OP, yes, I am influenced by avatars and sometimes, when someone has a scary looking one I don't like to look too much for fear of having bad dreams. My current one is about as scary as I can handle.

Sometimes when people change theirs I lose them for a little bit until I realize who the new picture belongs to. I identify people by their avatars - it's easier than thinking of their name.

When I had that little bunny avatar it derailed a few threads. lol!!

Or they are simply interested in the Axis forces in WWII!

It was a joke. Didn't mean you should change it. 8)
