I feel a huge pressure.

To be hair free, to have long brown hair, to be petite, to speak softly. Basically what all men seem to want.

As men are so centred around looks it makes it even worse. Then again there are different pressures for men.

There is pressure in society for women to look attractive, and lots of women feel it, put personally I don't pay much attention to it. I don't fit in with society anyway, so I only pay attention to the values that I need to comply with to survive. And being pretty isn't one of them. The women who feel it most are the ones who want to be in the popular crowd and to have males attracted to them.

Seconded. I dont' feel the pressure to look nice. I wear no make up, don't do my hear in a special way, and just wear a tee and sweatpants. Except when I have to go to church, I have to look nice.

Generally speaking, unattractive females are more likely to be able to find a mate than incompetent males are. This is probably due in part to the stronger reproductive desire in males, making them more often willing to settle for "anything they can get", while females who can't get anything better than an inept effeminate loser will often simply become more asexual. This results in more "below standard" females finding acceptance and more below standard males meeting rejection.

The amount of pressure felt by either side really boils down to how badly their difficulties interfere with their goals, and with the drive being stronger in men and more passive in women, the more pronounced difficulty lies with men and the pressure they face is greater.

Of course, there are exeptions to the rule, but the instances in which it's adhered to far outnumber those exceptions.

statistically, this makes no sense at all, considering that an equal number of males and females are paired up, and an equal number remain single. that means that an equal number of each are not chosen. if it isn't the unattrative females.... then who is it? the incompetent females? because it has to be someone!

Statistically, you have no statistical basis for these claims at all. :?

pardon? how could more men than women be left out if they are marrying each other? it is statistically impossible for your claim to be possible. no proof required here. men have this funny idea that every single girl is taken, yet they themselves are single. not possible - there are girls who are not chosen either. otherwise there would need to be vastly more men than women in existence. equal numbers of both men and women must be ultimately rejected.

I feel a lot of pressure to be pretty. It's like I was entered into a beauty contest against my will just for being born female. It sucks. D:

Thanks. It was my paraphrasing the first paragraph in the body image chapter in the book "Our Bodies, Ourselves" that I bought on recommendation by one of the users here. The section on body image is very helpful and isn't filled with generic crap just to make you feel better. It actually explains WHY society is the way it is and why you don't have to conform if you don't want to. :D

I do notice that females have mores pressure to look good. Anyone mind telling me how much?

The Barbie and Ken doll collection promotes the idea of physical attractiveness.

The large cosmetics/keep one's hair forever industries are build around the false idea of eternal youthfulness/eternal life (so to speak).

The current Obama White House has a campaign to eliminate all US fat children (obesity) within twenty years (sending the false message, some believe, that the White House wants perfect bodies for all USA children).

Princess Fiona had a big problem and great pressure to be physically attractive 24/7 vs 12/7.

Marge Simpson has never had a big issue with being perfectly physically attractive but she does support the cosmetics industry on a regular basis.

I'm a woman and I feel a lot of pressure from society to be attractive. However, I try not to think about it too much because I'm not seeking out a boyfriend/husband so I really see no logical reason to make myself look good.

I often wear the same clothes ( I usually wear T-shirts, shorts, or jeans when it's colder here in the subtropics) for days, or even weeks, on end. I don't sweat much, because I don't spend alot of time outside in the heat and humidity right now. I don't do too many other things either which would make my clothes dirty and/or stinky. I always wear deodorant, but I don't take showers everyday and sometimes I don't get a shower for over a week. Nobody, including family, has ever told me that I smell although everyone frowns upon the fact that I don't take showers/change clothes on a regular basis. I really just don't see the importance of it and I never have.

That describes me fairly well and I am female. I have never been interested in the societal standards that require women to look a certain way. They just didn't "take" with me for whatever reason. I consider it a chore to even try to look reasonably presentable.

It's not quite that simple though, because I do feel that I would like to look like the person that I am, and just wearing comfortable, plain clothes makes me look like a suburban housewife (no offense to anyone) which I am not and don't want to be. I feel like I should try to seek out clothes that represent me for who I am, but it just seems like so much trouble.
