a syndrome or a learned behaviour
This topic really gets me going, as it has a lot of personal importance to me. When I was a small child and my parents took me to a Psychiatrist for my issues that were baffling to them, he said the same thing, "Did he learn this repetitive motion and other behaviors off of something he saw on tv?" My mother knew it was utter nonsense, but she was only 20 at the time and had no idea what else to do. It is, of course, no fault of hers, but now I am struggling into adulthood after being sedated from age 9 to age 20 with a whole new and scary world to try and cope with. So please if anyone tells you it is a "learned" behavior, don't give them a second more of your time and look for someone that is competent and understanding. When people make assumptions that are supposedly "professional," it only hurts the people that are trying to get help.
