Germans arent autistic!

Europe is a funny continent though and theres alot of differences between cultures which is rather climate based really.

The southern part of europe is very hot. And as you go upward the climate becomes colder. For some strange reason, this also shows in our culture. Southern european people are more flammable than northern european people. Southern europeans live more with their hearts, northern european live more with their brains. Germany is a large country in the west/north of europe so they do tend to be more rational.

Another climatething that have really shaped our cultures in the past is simply the weather. North-western europe is really rainy, but on the other hand its not very cold outside nor is it very warm outside. We are in the position to work 24 hrs a day if we wanted to because its never too cold to stay near a fire and never to hot to become drowsy. Putting on a sweater an walking around is enough to keep us warm so throughout our history north/western europeans have always been really busy doing stuff. Combine that with logic and rational thinking et voila. Well ofcourse there is alot more to it aswell, people in europe didnt live that far away from eachother so we were always able to combine and sell stuff to eachother, put our heads together, etc.

As you go more east-side in europe the climates become less moderate. Eastern europe has really tough winters and you can barely do anything. Northern europe barely has any inhabs and has its seperate culture too, alot of people from lapland (sami's) still live in an oldfashioned style.
Once you go south and cross the great Alps, people take afternoon naps and then work til 20:00, just to skip the intense midday heats. Their life is slower than western europe's because really, who wants to put alot of energy into activities when its really hot?

So no, not autistic. :)
We do have emotions, we do have intuition, we do have social skills, and we do have understanding in others. Its just that in some things we arent that flagrant about it and at times we surpress it too because we're simply ashamed of it. Its stupid but true.

The dutch and german culture is rather similar, except for the fact that dutch people are alot more arrogant and we're greedy. Ohwell.

Steve Hsu, Professor of physics at the University of Oregon posted an interesting article about playwright David Mamet and Ashkanazi Jews and Asperger's Syndrome.

Mamet on Asperger's, Ashkenazim and the movies

The excerpt below is from his book Bambi vs Godzilla.

Quote:
DAVID MAMET

I think it is not impossible that Asperger’s syndrome helped make the movies.

The symptoms of this developmental disorder include early precocity, a great ability to maintain masses of information, a lack of ability to mix with groups in age-appropriate ways, ignorance of or indifference to social norms, high intelligence and difficulty with transitions, married to a preternatural ability to concentrate on the minutiae of the task at hand.

This sounds to me like a job description for a movie director. Let me also note that Asperger’s syndrome has its highest prevalence among Ashkenazi Jews and their descendants. For those who have not been paying attention, this group constitutes, and has constituted since its earliest days, the bulk of America’s movie directors and studio heads.

(italics inserted by me) I think David Mamet was referring to Stephen Speilberg.

Interesting idea. Anyone know of any studies into this?

On that note, I have met a few Germans over the years, and none of them have ever struck me as particular autistic. In fact, they pretty much completely violated the "cold, hard, rational German" stereotype.

Einstein was jewish, not german. I am sure there are some folks in Germany with autism, but just because someone is interested in machines and the culture frowns on showing emotion (so the kids are raised to be calm and practical, rather than emotional) doesn't mean they are autistic. It's the other components of autism that make one autistic - like the trouble we have with personal relationships, networking, making friends, difficulty coming up with the banter and "small talk" crucial for putting other people at ease and flirting.
It is not clear if germans as a people have trouble doing this.

Jewdism is a religion, not a race or ethnicity. That's like saying I'm not American, I am a Christian.

I have no doubt that there are "mind blind" Germans. Why should nationality have anything to do with this.

It's both a race and religion. One can be a "secular Jew," identifying with the cultural parts of their Jewish heritage, while not beveling in the religious parts.

No, German Jews (or most of them) wanted to be Germans; it was the German non-Jews who did not want the Jews being Germans.

However, I understand your point - attending that the ethnical roots of Einstein were not german, he is a bad example of German Aspie (even if we accept that he had AS - for what we know, he could had been simply a "NT gifted nerd").

your statement, caerulean, reminded me of this statement. Both are examples of making the mistake of stereotyping vast amounts of humanity and creating a prohibition within the group of general human traits. Human groups will contain a smattering of all human attributes, and no hard and fast rules or statements make it any different.

I would guess that AS transcends all cultures, ethnicity and credos.

Yes, there are autistic Germans, autistic Africans, autistic Asians, autistic Paciffic Islanders, autistic Native Americans, autistic Irish, autistic Australian, autistic English, autistic Japanese, autistic Chinese, autistic Koreans, autistic Indians, autistic jews, autistic christians, autistic muslims, autistic buddists, autistic shintos, etc. It's a human condition, not isolated to one spefic race or culture.

I have a healthy dose of German ancestry. German is known for their love for machines similar to France being known for their art and culture. I also think of Oktoberfest and rowdy beer halls when I think of Germany, not really something most would consider to be Aspergers related.

Steven Spielberg doesn't have Asperger's syndrome.

Surely you realise that Jews can have ethnicities besides being Hebrew? Einstein was a German Jew, my great grandmother was an Irish Jew, their are Chinese Jews, Hispanic Jews... Judaism does not trump nationality.
