casting directors who are specifically looking for actors with asperger's syndrome and autism
Why are they specifically looking for actors with asperger's syndrome and autism? To act the roles of characters who have aspergers or autism? And thus it is more realistic because you have an autistic person acting an autistic character, is that the reason?
I think its because aspergers give off "loser" body language really easily, they can play losers, or depressed/insane/weird people really well is my guess.. although there may be something about aspergers that lends itself to acting, since I know I've always found myself imagining myself in some kind of scene when I fantasize/daydream a lot, that might mean something... :O
They might be looking for people who exhibit the most essential visible characteristics of Asperger's. I think such a list might include the following:
precise speech tone and/or monotone
strangely aloof (some would call it "stiff") body posture
reduced facial expression
lack of eye contact or, conversely, oddly fixed gaze
stims: twirling hair or other odd gestures, e.g. playing with nostrils, picking at oneself
"hoppy" or otherwise strange gait
All of these could be ludicrous and make us all look like Mr.Bean if the portrayal wasn't handled properly.
Maybe the recruiters want autistic people who can portray autism accurately without turning the portrayal into something offensive.
