when someone with AS lacks common sense, is this typical?

I think everyone lacks common sense. Common sense just means what lot of people would figure out on their own without being told. But hey when you read about stupid things people do like dumbest consumer reports or dumbest 911 calls or customer complaints, you will see how much common sense some people can lack and it might shock you because even you are smarter than that and wouldn't be that dumb. I have often thought "is this for real?" because I didn't think anyone be that dumb so I thought they were just fooling around. But no I got told it is real and some people are actually that stupid.

The only reason why people say we lack it is because we take things literal, we don't pick up on cues or learn things on our own and we have to be taught them or told about it. Only way we learn on our own is reading about it. I am talking about social skills of course.

I think that rigid or blank and white thinking had frequently caused me to seem lacking common sense.

An example will be coming up with a solution that takes a lot of effort, but get's the job done. Then someone comes along (when I'm moments from finishing) and suggests another approach that would have been much easier. Not thinking of that easier solution makes me think I would come across as not having common sense.

It depends what you mean by "common sense".

I thought "common sense" meant something like "obvious" in some cases. For example you have to go from point A to point B, there is 2 roads, both are fine but Road 1 is much shorter then Road 2, common sense would dictate to use Road 1 (unless for some reason you need time to think about something before getting to your destination, or you are not in a hurry and simply want to take your time, then you could take the longer road). But if you want to get to your destination as quickly as possible then the obvious solution would be to take Road 1.

people with AS just tend to operate outside of social construct, which involves "common sense."

if an individual were to doubt all social truths that have been hard-wired into him, he might arrive where we are. but the truth which he believes to be "common sense" is actually social conditioning, and the idea to actually QUESTION such a significant aspect of his identity (he is a social creature, after all) likely won't occur. society is in a state of self-deceit to avoid the chaos of abandoning its very essence, and since most individuals find a secure identity in something of a social bible... to abandon this would be to lose the identity, to cease to exist at all. i think that many individuals with AS, absorbed into personal worlds, were impervious to the impact of social conditioning and therefore lack "common sense," which truly aught to be scrutinized as skeptically as the christian bible. it's virtually the same, just on a larger, vaguer and less tangible scale.

Well I have been given a lot of incredulous looks from people who go on to say 'how could you not know to do that?'
I believe this thing I was supposed to know to do would have required me to have some common sense in this area.

Not touching a hot plate is common sense.
Not looking at the Sun is common sense.
Not walking through traffic without looking is common sense.

I have lacked that bit of knowledge at times.

To me common sense means knowledge a person over a certain age should know from experience, or just picking it up from parents, siblings or friends.
I'm not sure if common sense applies to the knowledge of social rules, like knowing when it's your turn to speak or talking about appropriate things.

But I also think people do make up their own common sense rules nowadays, especially when they are insulting you.

In closing I might add I have some sense but I most certainly am not common.

I really didn't mean to offfend, and sorry for the harsh answer, in my defense it was 3 AM and i tend to get very impulsive and irritable when i'm tired....
i really meant my sentence in a way that in my head roughly translated as "lack of logic is an impairment", but yes, it came out wrong.

Common sense is the reason most people would think the Earth was "flat" if no one ever told them otherwise.

In other words, common sense can be wrong.

Whether a significant number of those with AS lack common sense, I don't think one can really say. However I do think it more likely that a person with AS only appears to lack common sense due to mis-interpretation of the situation or difficulty with expression.

There are also many situation in which one falsely perceives something to be a matter of "common sense" due to their familiarity with it.

I think the OP was referring to the posts of Corp900 where the "common sense" take all the meaning
