Took the Plunge
well.
my biological paents told me they thought i was AS when i was between 11 and 13. then a CPN tried putting it to me when i was about 13/14.
then a about 4 motnhs ago i found out more about it and i put it to my foster parents at the time who completly thought it was a load of rubbish. then after i left she read up oin it and dicided i might have been right after all. but anyway.
I am going to go and talk to a pro about it at somepoint soon, find out for myself.

I started this thread.
Before telling my mom about my suspicions, I told my Aunt. She read about a paragraph of the article, and then told me that "If I was psycho, I probably wouldn't know about it, I'm just stuck in a rut", and "I knew you as a kid, you learned to talk early, so you can't have any form of autism".
Now, had she actually read the article (I asked her to), she would see that people with Asperger's do in-fact know about their "issues" (as she put it), and often learn to compensate for them, even if they don't know they have AS or don't believe that they have it. In-fact, many adults who are diagnosed with it read about it themselves before seeing someone about it (from my readings anyways). She would also see that with Asperger's, there is no significant delay in learning to speak generally.
She did make a good point that I had a screwed up childhood from grades 6-9 (my Mom had a nervous breakdown, Dad had a drug habit, forced to live with grandparents who were so addicted to shopping they would leave me home alone day after day with my older brother who used to beat the s**t out of me). However, I fail to see how problems I had in those years caused the behavioural issues I had from pre-school through Grade 4 (I got better after that, and began learning to compensate better for my "issues"). I also fail to see how that would cause my parents, 7 years beforehand, to have to pay big bucks to put me in a special pre-school to learn how to socialize. Then, when you take into account that she was a teenager when I was that young and was off doing her own s**t, and wasn't nearly as close to me as my mom who DID notice "issues", I think she's just full of it.
If I get an official diagnosis, I'll make sure to send her a copy and make her eat her own words though. I can be very spiteful at times.
My Mom has had her own mental health issues, so I know she doesn't think these things are nonexistant. She was incredibly supportive.
I've never told my parents I have AS, they told me I have AS. I don't know how they reacted since I was DX'ed at Jr. Kindergarten. but I was told I had AS at Grade 8. I didn't really think much about it since I was only told about a few traits and I didn't really think it was important.
After reading about it, it kinda surprised me since most of the traits matched me. It explained why I was so different from most people and why I was so sensitive to certain types of clothing, while others weren't. It also explained why I get so obsessed over things and can't get it out of my head.
"It also explained why I get so obsessed over things and can't get it out of my head."
Yeah, I'm like this too. Until very recently, I would talk to everyone about what I was interested in, constantly, all the while not being able to tell I was annoying the hell out of them (until I overheard someone saying one time I was annoying the hell out of him). I now make sure someone shares the same interest as me (well...interest for them, obsession for me :p) before I start rambling on about it.
Used to be dinosaurs when I was small, then space, then geology and rocks, then video games (espescially FF7...still an awesome game!), all the while with computers mixed in from day one. However, my obsession with computers was always mild compared to the other ones, until the last few years, when I bought my own computer (well, ummm, computerS
...I spend way too much money).
At one point, I was convinced that Linux was the best thing since sliced bread, and tried to move my whole family over to it. I just kind of pissed them all off cause none of their computers worked the way they wanted to after I did that (except for my Mom, she was always supportive of my obsessions, thinking they were a gift, and even learned a lot of Linux herself, I was pretty impressed). Sometimes I obsess over certain companies (for instance, Google, I think they are an amazing company).
Law is another thing I obsess over, espescially the SCO Group fiasco/scam. Even though I have a Mac now, I still follow those cases religiously, down to the point where I can even remember dates of when things were filed or letters were sent in the case.
People mainly think I'm weird because of my obsessions (I guess I kind of am), but they don't understand that it is simply who I am. I don't view it myself as a bad thing, I enjoy having my obsessions, just like my Dad and Brother enjoy watching hockey!
