What are we congratulating her about?

Who doesn't get the AS diagnoses? Who's "her"?

You.

OK, I'm totally confused. Are you mistaking me for someone else? (I'm a "him" for starters...)

So am I.

Didn't you say the doctors said you don't have AS?

I thought you were a female, my bad.

EDIT: Nevermind, reread your post for like the tenth time and finally got that it was two doctors that said you don't have AS and the one you were seeing for the diagnoses said they both should get their licenses revoked. :wall:

You went in for grief counseling and came out with an AS diagnoses?

Whoa, lots going on here. Let me try to clarify...

There are three people involved here (not counting me): psychiatrist, therapist, and AS specialist.

The psychiatrist and therapist go together. I've been seeing them for three years; I showed both of them my AS self-screening reports; and I got "probably not AS" diagnoses from both of them. I wasn't so confident, though, because neither of them have any experience with AS. As we started talking about it, it became pretty clear that they were both just making wild guesses. So, both of them suggested that I should probably see a specialist and offered to give me referals -- but neither of them ever followed through on that.

So, separate from them, I went to the Asperger Center for Education and Training in New York. AS and HFA are all these people treat. I saw the head of the center who diagnosed me with AS, saying, "You have nearly every single possible characteristic. And almost no counter-indicators. Not even a close call." In addition, she said that she was concerned with OCD and executive functioning. She said that I could consider those as either separate from the AS diagnosis or a part of it -- as I liked. It doesn't matter how I view it, according to her. She had some extremely negative things to say about the "treatment" I had received so far -- i.e., my psychiatrist and my therapist don't know jack about AS. That's the only reason those two entered my original post to begin with. Sorry for the confusion...

No problem. I re read it again and saw I read it wrong. Talk about embarrassing when it looked obvious now what you were saying and gosh how could I miss that? This is one of the things I hate about myself and I bet if I were to be given a reading test, I'd probably score low for reading comprehension. It's been in my school records I have a hard time with it. I remember being in 3rd grade and I had to write a sentence about what I learned about what I read and I wrote "The orbits are in outer space" and when my mom read it, she had a reaction and I didn't know why. Now I am thinking that probably didn't make any sense what I wrote but I had a hard time understanding what I was reading and that's what I thought that's what it was saying. I didn't even know what a orbit was either but had the idea it was in outer space. Now if I were to read that again today, it would make sense and I would wonder "how could I have not understood this before? It was so simple." I assume this is a learning difficulty I have.

The congratulations is for FINALLY finding out.

I kinda understand how you feel. Recently, I went to the doctor for a basic check up for my blood pressure. The receptionist had everyone fill out an update form; at the end of it there was a question asking if I had any other concerns. I answered that I was concerned about being on the Spectrum. I didn't mention any point on the Spectrum because there are so many possibilities. When the doctor finished checking my blood pressure (my reason for being there) he asked about my concern.

I was primarily expecting him to blow me off because I had read about others who had been scoffed at by primary care physicians. Instead he asked me why I was concerned. I'm not really good at verbalizing despite my writing ability, but I did say that my concern was not just about the present but about a pattern of things going all the way back to childhood.

Without any hesitation, he immediately referred to my medical benefits card saying that because of my plan I might be directed to a specific place for a psychologist and said that I should look into getting checked out. He also disagreed about the whole adults not needing a diagnosis. He said that self-knowledge is a good thing that helps us understand more about ourselves and what kind of support we may need.

I was surprised and somewhat encouraged, but also suddenly scared.

And like it has been mentioned...

NOW what?
