I have done some research into hyperlexia. I thought my son had it. It turns out that he's just an early reader because he's understanding what he's reading. However, what you are describing sounds like hyperlexia to me.

Me too. I always see words when I am listening, thinking or speaking. I'm so used to it that I'm not consciously aware of it most of the time but every so often I notice that happening, like if someone uses a word that I haven't seen and don't know how to spell, it really throws me off.

5-10 percent kids on the autistic spectrum are said to have hyperlexia. There are also NT kids who teach themselves to read between 2 and 4 who are just very bright. However, it seems that statistically, kids who teach themselves to read before 4 are more likely to be AS. It's certainly not a 1:1 correlation but there is a strong link.

I was reading in English fluently before age 3; well before I learned to speak English fluently (I spoke another language at home even though I was raised in the U.S.). My parents and family friends thought I was a little genius. Little did they know that I would still be underemployed and living at home at 35 while my brother, who didn't learn to read until the end of kindergarten, would be making over 100K a year before age 30.

I was stuck in a hospital bed for a while when I was three, and my elder sister, who'd just learned to read, showed me how it was done.

Feels like I've been reading non stop ever since. It's one of the few human skills that makes sense to me.
