Temple Grandin, in her many books on autism, talks about the three types of AS. "They are: (i) visual thinkers such as I who are often poor at algebra, (ii) pattern thinkers... who excel in math and music but may have problems with reading or writing composition, and (iii) verbal specialists who are good at talking and writing but they lack visual skills." I think I am third type, but I do have visual skills... however, I am definitely not the second type. I suck at math and music both. I'm jealous now.

Those categories don't work for me. Are you sure she was talking about Asperger's and not HFA? Grandin doesn't have Asperger's but HFA. As someone with AS and not HFA, my challenges are almost all in the area of social deficits, which some auditory processing and executive function issues thrown in.

But I do not have deficits in verbal thinking, abstract thinking, logical thinking, musical thinking or spatial thinking--in fact I excel at all these. I excel at writing and reading as well as math and music, and have high verbal, logical-mathematical and visual-spatial intelligence scores. Those are my highest scoring areas. My scores were so high in those areas in high school, that the US Marines tried to recruit on my test scores alone--but I told them I wanted to go to college to study music, which I did.

It seems I am strong in all three of these categories, but without the deficits listed--but again, I have Asperger's and my deficits are primarily social, while Grandin has HFA, so she may deficits in areas I don't.

The link to the article is here, and it does say Asperger's in the body of the article: http://www.grandin.com/inc/visual.think ... erson.html

In addition, the DSM V will no longer differentiate between the two, despite what some may see as obvious differences, and has already been (by most practitioners) considered to be a form or subset of HFA http://www.associatedcontent.com/articl ... nated.html. I'm not cognitively impaired per se, but my skills in music and math are only average, whereas my non-verbal (picture patterns) and written language skills are greater than that.

But maybe you're just special.

I am a logical thinker excel at math but am terrible at music. I have difficulty understanding the abstract, I do not have an ounce of creativity in me and have never been able to appreciate the the arts. I have average verbal though sometimes I have a harder time articulating myself or following directions. My visual/spatial skills are apparently above average (according to a 2004 assessment) but I do have trouble remebering where to locate things in the supermarket.
