My husband is NT and he supports me (OCD), a son with HFA and a daughter with MR. But because he is "normal" someone who has a disability should get priority in the workplace supposedly because it would be easier for him to get another job. Another job where? They don't grow on trees - especially factory jobs. The Aspie in question is not providing for a family and his family is able to provide some support for him and if he could not find work he may be able to get some type of assistance. Financial assistance is NOT provided when someone is married even if they would be considered unable to work due to a medical condition. So even though my husband is NT he has alot more responsibility than some Aspies do. That is why it is generally last hired/first fired because no one knows everyone's circumstances. When employers pick and choose who gets laid off without some sort of policy then they could be sued by everyone claiming discrimination of their race, religion, disability, age or whatever.

Okay. I can agree with much of what is said here. The world is a cold and dark place. That is a fact of life.

So, business is supposed to act this way. Well, there is something seriously wrong with a system that is supposed to work this way. There then needs to be system reformation. That much goes for NTs as well. I, however, want to bring up something that may be helpful to us aspies. It's a view that has been brought up before, but maybe not within this site as much.

Someone on here posted something about a reference to another aspie website. I never joined, but only glanced at it after seeing the link from this site. I read a few of the articles about the idea about the so-called "aspie island." In my searches, I came across this post talking about this employer and how he treated this aspie.

I'm not advocating completely segregating ourselves from the NT world. In fact, most of my friends, very few that they have been, have been NT. I never really personally knew any aspies, and I never heard of the term from years back. I think back now, and I believe that I did knew a couple of students at my school that were probably aspie in nature.

What I am advocating is that we need to take people like this particular person under our wing. We need to be able to provide him some level of support. Sure, we can't do that ourselves. We can, however, work towards a goal to create an aspie community in which someone like this can come and live peacefully. This person has trouble living peacefully in the real world. Remember, there are a lot of things to consider ... living expenses, bills, transporation, crap from family members, etc...

Because of the things that many of you have said ... that business has the right to do this when things get rough and all ... don't you think that neuro-diversity is a myth? Neuro-diversity does not simply mean understanding each other and getting along. How can we get along, when NTs start balking about us because we don't have a job like "normal" people. Today's societies seem to have this irrational work ethic. If you don't have a job, NTs get so damn pissed. They nag, b***h, moan, and don't let up about the fact that society's groupthink about work has brainwashed them. NTs are brainwashed by this stuff, because they are more or less fashioned by what they read and hear. We think rationally. And I should mention that it's not ALL NTs, because there are some that are very understanding. They are, however, or at least seem to be, few and far in between. This is the worst thing about many NTs, their over-reliance on judging all others by ours jobs and whether or not they work. NTs, for example, don't give a damn if someone has trouble sustaining a living.

Think about it. You all appear to be in agreement to what I just said. It's just that some of you seem to think that neuro-diversity is so possible. There are those NTs that are caring for us, surely ... but they're not the ones I'm talking about.

We need affirmative action for aspies! If you don't support the idea of an aspie community, and it doesn't have to be an all-aspie community, but just a community operated under aspie terms. If others want to be a part of such a community, then they need to adhere to our standards. If some NTs don't like that, maybe then they'll start thinking about how we feel. Also, if you're not all in agreement with that, then think about the idea of aspie-related affirmative action.

Affirmative action does not work. Employers will simply find a way around it.

A popular practice for employers to get only the "kind of workers they want" is to automatically weed out resumes in certain zip codes. You cannot prove they are doing this and as such, have no way of knowing it. My mother found this out when her boss complained that she was not from the suburbs.

I also do not want to think that I was hired only to fill a quota and not because of my skills. That does not make for a good employer/employee relationship.

What be do need is a job coach system where you are assigned the same case worker or group of case workers throughout your whole life and can go to them is something like this does happen.
