The SERIOUS replies to thought stops are pretty much what I meant. Literally, my brain stops in its track, and I have to get it going again.

When I was talking with the psychologist, I would stop talking in a way that indicated that I was having thought stops.

I know I do.

Unfortunately the stupid doctor that had me tested when I was 4 thought I was fine. I cant believe how under-diagnosed I was.

I sure do. The thought stops get in the way, especially.

When a psychologist saw me one of the main things he said he heard were the thought stops. I haven't heard of others refer to "thought stops" here yet.

To be fair, I have ADHD too. It's apparently present in quite a few people who are on the spectrum, so I don't know that it matters. :)

I think it does. Until recently I pretty much dismissed my ADD, in favor of focusing on AS and how it affects me. A few weeks ago though, I learned some things about ADD I never knew before, and now realize the ADD is responsible for a LOT more than I thought. It also conflicts in some ways with AS, so the two together, at least in me, paint a different picture than either would on it's own. And it's not as if I can look at ADD and AS separately, then mentally lay one picture on top of the other and "viola! This is what I look like!"

It's slightly more complicated than that. Certain things are clearly AS, and certain things are clearly ADD. Certain things are present in both, and other things "appear" when the two are mixed together, that wouldn't be there if only one or the other were present.

The only reason whether it's caused by ADD or AS matters is in the context of the OP's question. Not everyone with AS is like this, therefore, I don't know if this trait would be present if I had AS and not ADD.

Me too, and this is a trait that I've found is also common in BOTH ADD and AS.

EDIT: I probably should mention the reason I don't think it's fair to attribute this particular trait in me to AS is because though I do (or at least have) fit the criteria for AS, some of the symptoms are mild now, and I don't have all of them. Where my ADD is concerned though, I have all nine of the attentive symptoms, and every one of them is constant and deeply entrenched. So I have the tendency to believe that those traits are more applicable to my ADD. This happens to be one of them.

My focus is never very good. I'm so easily distracted. To keep myself focused and get things done I carry a to-do list everywhere with me. It takes away a lot of fun. When you have stuff like "do laundry", "call sister-in-law" on it that doesn't seem so bad, when it get to "play games with kids", "have sex", "watch a relaxing movie" on the list you can tell I'm too tense about this focus thing. :D

Have to lavugh at this. Especially that "have sex" is on the list. :)

Totally!!
But like a few others have said, I also have AD/HD... Have found some research that suggests a pretty srtong link between ADD and the spectrum...so interesting! (special interests and hyperfocus much?)

I laugh at myself sometimes, seeing how the AS and ADHD work together to make my mind all sorts of interesting... The aspie blunt honesty and the add impulsivness have sure combined to create some....delicate..situations over the years..

Also, I love the phrase 'thought stops' it is much better than my explanation...'brain farts'

I also say sometimes that instead of 'my train of though derailed' it 'got abducted by aliens'

I think it's funnier...most people I say that to just look at me weird

I usually reside with people with very uninteresting discussions(informally forced)... within 5 seconds I lose my attention if it is not remotely in my field of interest.

With tests I also lose focus pretty quickly.. although this has developed over the last few years, my concentration was much better few years ago.

Same here ... and sometimes while waking up from a brief snooze I have no idea at all as to where I actually am.
