I strongly suggest you ask to see this doctor again. Take a tape recorder with you when you see him and record that conversation (without his knowing)....ask him to go over with you the reasons behind his diagnosis and if he gives you the same (or even more ridiculous) drivel ask him to put it in writing for you.

Since he will refuse (im sure of it) ask him directly that if he is not confident about his diagnosis that he cannot submit it on paper then he should refer you to another specialist for a second opinion.

If he refuses to do that then you can simply leave and put up a complaint to the whatever board regulates psychologists and provide them with a copy of the recorded conversation. Consult a lawyer as well.

This was hysterical, I just had a good laugh! Thanks.

You forgot one thing though, that all Aspies get their underwear at K-mart....(like Rainman).

Though in diagnosing a woman, I´m surprised he didn´t use Sigourney Weaver´s character in "Snow Cake" as a basis, but maybe he hasn´t seen that movie.

But seriously I´m just shocked! So shocked, that I don´t even know what to say about this doctor....where to start? I thought I had heard everything up until now, but that just takes the cake.

I wonder if he uses any other movies in place of the DSM.

"You can't have Obsessive compulsive Disorder. You are not like the character in the movie The Aviator"

"You can't have Schizophrenia. You are not like the character in the movie A Beautiful Mind"

Who needs the DSM when you have Hollywood?

See, this is why autistic people (and other people with mental issues, for that matter) need to be more visible outside the Internet. Then you won't have uninformed people like the doctor in the OP.

OMG! You guys crack me up. And making me feel welcome! :D

Not but you know, you just gotta laugh at this!

I'm happy to hear i'm not the only n u guys understand what i mean.

A toast to the douchebags!! YES! He's definitely one of "them"!

It seems to me they have a completely hollywood distorted view of what asd/as is! Guys, I really couldn't believe it. And for me, one of the times mutism kicks in when i'm baffled beyong belief by stupidity. I get this sudden surges of responses i wanna lash out, but in light of trying to be the better bigger person, i just go mute! lol Makes me look less "crazy". Also makes me look like im not trying to defend myself...
*shrug shoulders*

WOW! Thank you guys for your support. It means so much. I've been feeling crazy and going in circles for so long...

*group hug* (yea.... i'm one of those! lol)

I do have another referral to an endocrinologist, cuz i've also had some severe "female issues". The one i'm seeing is one who apparently has researched the links between autism spectrum disorders and certain gynecological disorders. And perhaps she has more expertise in how it manifests in women. Another 4 months till then... we'll see!

Oh my! If only i had a recorder for everytime i heard something outrageous from a doctor!

I'm on page two of the letter already! I have the feeling that it will probably get tossed aside and not taken seriously, but, u know, i just wanna make sure the paper trail is there!

LOL I am not letting that one go! Dont know if ill go as far as taking legal action... but i'm definitely making noise about it.

Yeah, you just have to laugh at things like this, and move on. It is just so ridiculous.

Good luck. I hope you can get a better answer from your next appointment.

Wow. As I was reading this I couldn't believe it was a Dr./professional. Even though my psychologist didn't know anything about AS, she tried to educate herself about it and has done very well and made herself professional about it. I am very sorry you have to go through that.

Where are you from? Do you have a DORS in your area? They evaluated me for free. It's called the Department of Rehabilitation Services in my area. Each state should have something similar, I think.

Sorry to hear that. That professional sounds like a hack.

One thing I've realized about medicine is that if a disorder doesn't kill you, a doctor is not likely to find out about his/her screw ups. Say that that professional you saw was missing 50% of ASC cases in the people he assessed -- how is he ever going to find out he's doing that poorly? There is no corrective feedback process, so such people will continue on feeling like they're doing an excellent job.

Well that is terrible, and beyond belief that someone could be so stupid. Of course, I work with the public and it should come as no surprise to me that people are dumb.

My psychiatrist said "Get that out of your head! You don't have Asperger's! You'd walk into the room and do something completely inappropriate if you had Asperger's!" (like pull my trousers down, maybe?).

When I mentioned it to my psychologist, she actually listened and referred me to her colleague, who specialises in ASD's. Her colleague then gave me the diagnosis. So they aren't all bad, really.

This whole thread made me laugh. I don't think I have ever enjoyed a thread here as this one.

You don't have AS or autism if you can't count cards or if you understand money and of course if you don't live in a institution.

No, they aren't all bad. But you need someone who is experienced AND well-respected in diagnosing people with ASD. I looked long and hard ... until I found someone recommended by Tony Attwood, who I already respected as a clinician. My psych spent 2 hours interviewing me, as well as getting me to complete the AQ Test beforehand. He then got my wife to complete the AQ Test about me during the following week, and we had a second, hour-long interview with the three of us, methodically going through all the diagnostic criteria. Then he diagnosed me as having Asperger's. And unlike Rain Man, I am married and have a career.

The thing is, it is even more difficult to diagnose females with AS, because they are rarer and present differently. Rain Man hardly qualifies as an example of female Asperger's syndrome, even if he did qualify as an example of male low-functioning autism (and that is debatable!). Unless the diagnostician is an expert, a specialist, in ASD AND specifically in ASD in females, their opinion may not be worth much.

Tony Attwood reckons that if you are convinced you are an Aspie, after reading and doing tests, then there is an 80% chance that you are right (he says that in this video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BKULcoVTDhU
Start at 9:45 and watch until the end - he talks about getting a diagnosis as an adult female).

An apropos response (couldn't find in the OP whether this was a psychologist or psychiatrist, so I'm giving multiple versions):

"You can't be a psychologist, you're nothing like Bruce Willis in the Sixth Sense."

"You can't be a psychiatrist, you're not nearly as polite as Hannibal Lecter."

ditto, perfect advice.

you want him to put this on tape and/or in writing, and then you want to forward it to your state's licensing board.
