I got told this at work last week, and weirdly enough, by a supervisor who hates me. I didn't think work was especially the place for having a light-hearted good time. Plus the idea hadn't even occurred to me - I was concentrating, trying to do my job correctly and since I struggle with multitasking, I can't do five things at once whilst kidding around making jokes. These days, I have to remember to smile and consciously work it out.

In some places of work, being able to display that you can have a laugh is what some employers look for as they like their staff to be social or to mix well with the crowd. I have known a few people to laugh at others jokes even if they are not funny just to fit in. In my mind, it's ridiculous, but then some things in life clearly are.

How does everyone else respond? Do you smile or laugh much, or do you remain kind of neutral? What exactly is "having fun" anyways? I never understand what people mean when they say that.
Everyone has their own unique definition of what 'having fun' is owing to their tastes. For some, it might be going night clubbing and getting drunk. To others, it might be going for a long walk on a sunny day with their best friend. Basically, what I'm trying to say is that you are the one who defines what having fun is for you. Don't let others decide that for you because you will ultimately be the one who ends up miserable. Being open to trying new things never did anyone any harm though, as you may find you like doing other things (or even find something else you dislike and wish to avoid lol).

I have had people saying this to me (family, mostly).
But I find my family so predictable, and they find me so predictable, and they know my moods what switch from one to another, and what upsets me, and what I get embarrassed of, and what I will say or do next, and it just makes it hard to smile and laugh with them - even though I love them all so much and enjoy being with them, and I am good at expressing my thoughts and feelings with them. My family are the ones who I feel the least shy in front of, but I still can't seem to smile and laugh. I've got to be in a really good mood to smile and laugh.
But with colleagues at work, it's a completely different story. They haven't really picked up on what upsets me, and they don't really know my vast reactions to certain things, and they don't really know the stories behind all my anxieties - when I do tell them my anxieties they just think they are just anxieties in general, type of thing. As a matter of fact - they don't even know I even have AS. So sometimes I can just push my AS to one side and bring out the NT part in me, and dive into a humorous conversation, which ends up in all of us laughing the whole time, including me - and I could even laugh and have fun socially for hours.

That is very, very good advice. Just you wait 'til I tell my family something like this the next time they criticise me for not smiling, laughing or having fun!

Thanks!
