Constantly! In my case, I do work in retail, so many people probably have me filed in their minds as a retail associate, but haven't got the specific store right. It happens so often that I probably sound irritated when I tell them that "I don't work here." What irritates me is when they assume I work there instead of asking me if I do.

This reminds me; I just saw the Big Bang Theory episode in which Sheldon is at the Electronics store and ends up spending a long time solving everyone's computer problems. An employee of the store ends up pointing out to Sheldon the he doesn't work there when he sees Sheldon using their computer terminal to help another customer. I'm sorry, but I don't remember his response, but it would be funnier anyway if you find the clip and hear it from him.

Not unless i'm somewhere where there's something interesting and i start talking to people about it.. Pet shops are a good example. A few times i've gotten into conversations with people who were also looking at reptiles and i'd explain about some of them and tell them which ones make good pets for beginners and all of that(and sometimes correct false information that the actual employees gave them.. like bearded dragons getting "four feet long" or something crazy like that)... then they'd think i was working, but i really just happened to be there and saw an opportunity to inform someone about something i'm interested in.

This is really funny - it has happened to me also. I have been taken to the staff canteen and given meals in a museum and in a hospital, and even when I explained that I was not staff it was still free because they thought it was funny.
