The chick didn't seem to mind. It's really funny how the bullies either forget or just don't think it was a big deal at all. You know, what they did back then. My self-esteem suffered till college 'cuz of them.

What I hate are people who say "everybody gets bullied at one time or another." Some of us got a lot more than our fair share.

That may be true in the severe cases. In the less severe cases, it's not true.

I agree. Picking on people with a known disability is (recently, at least) taboo. But when it is an invisible disability, which it will be in some people, the public perception is that the person has chosen to "be weird". It is this perceived choice which the bullies are lashing out at.

In another thread somebody once wrote a thread that bullies are attempting to perform social engineering. They see somebody who is refusing to follow social norms (for that is what they see) and they attempt to bully them back into conformity. Somebody who is nonverbal has quite clearly not made a choice. It is the perception of choice to be different that the bullies are trying to bully away as a form of social engineering. Those who have no choice (by their perception) are left alone because bullying serves no purpose. They couldn't conform if they wanted to.

I remember I didn't get picked on much when I was six and seven and I figure it's because I was in special ed full time so it made it obvious I had something. Only few kids picked on me and they didn't get shunned.

This reminds me of "blame the victim" from what you described about society.

I was making a joke. Not too long ago, I heard on the radio that these girls were on their Facebook trash talking their school and somehow the school found out about it and decided to sue them for "slander."
