Giving up TV and Autism
I completely gave up on TV some years ago. I was at a point when I had to prioritize differently, which left less and lesss time for watching TV. At first I found it really annoying to miss out episodes that I was used to watching and found it annoying to always have to try to get back into the story after having missed a couple of episodes, so I ended up giving up TV almost completely.
When I did that I suddenly had a lot more time to enjoy other activities and I felt kind of liberated for not feeling the need to check the TV programme daily and keep track of the time and make sure to be home watching TV at the right time or recording whatever I was missing and finding time to watch it some other time. All of the sudden I could stay out or do other things whenever I wanted to without worrying about TV. It felt nice.
After a while I moved somewhere else and didn't bother even buying a TV. I didn't need one. I lived without any access to TV for a long time. After moving somewhere else again my sister gave me her old TV and I watched it on a rare occasion if something really interesting was on, but didn't feel as attached to it as I used to. I still don't watch much TV at all and don't feel like I can't live without it or miss anything. If I'm doing something else I don't think about TV or worry about missing anything, but if I'm bored or tired and something nice is on I'll watch it.
All I watch on TV is Stargate and NCIS. Possibly The Big Bang Theory. So I could probably watch them on something else instead of TV.

I have one. The only TV broadcast things I watch on it is the 7 o'clock news and couple of local quiz shows. I do have a lot of DVD and shows I like to watch from my media center however. Ads in shows just bug me too much to put up with it, as does having to wait for a show to come on at a specific time. Well, specific time except when said show MUST be pushed back because some very important semi-illiterates had to play a ballgame and all media must yield it's timeslot so we can watch something that important.
I prefer being able to pick exactly what I'm watching and when without ads or sport events getting in my way. I don't even like putting up with the DVD trailers or silly animated half minute opening intro to the menu, I almost always end up ripping my media to a pure 'just the show thanks' form and stick it on an HD. Most TV stations have way too much reality TV crap on them, if I cared that much about other people's inane chatter and bickering I'd... probably not have AS for one thing...

I might watch TV more if I actually had one.
I used to watch at least an hour or two after school throughout middle school and high school.
I haven't had one since I went off to college, and that's been at least 7-8 years now.

One thing I noticed about TV shows in the past were they had somewhat of a predictable structure that had a calming effect on me after a stressful day. Maybe it is because they have to work harder to get peoples attention and compete against all of the other stuff that is out there, but the shows seem crazy to me now. What used to seem like a watered down version of reality seems like an exagerrated one beyond belief now.
And, for the 24 hour news cycle, I wonder if the Glenn Beck Phenomenon is where we are headed, as far as what it takes to compete and get people's attention.

My memories of the news growing up were endless pictures of Vietnam and the race to space (which most everyone paid attention to). The local station weather was the only news I was interested in. I never imagined that the news would evolve into entertainment.
Hard for me to imagine what it would have been like growing up without watching TV. I would have probably read more, imagined more, developed a better ability to speak and write, and spent more time outdoors involved in physical activity.
I know exactly how you feel. I find my stress level greatly increases when I watch any sort of 'breaking news'. I keep my news sources to written word nowadays, I think it is literally bad for my heart to watch Fox News or CNN
And your worried about your job or don't have a job and they talk about how there are no jobs, but you are worthless if you don't have a job. Amazing what people feed their brains when they watch this kind of stuff. When I was stressed over my job I couldn't watch it no matter what was on it; just insult added to injury.
I didn't watch any TV until highschool and I could either rent a season or get it on the computer. I now watch some shows to see if I can understand people better. I feel like it increases my ability to respond to people appropriately and determine their responses better.
I also watch it if I have too much on my mind and want to not think.
Generally, my tv watching is hit or miss. I will spend weeks without watching it, and then in a couple of days I will get caught up on the three or four shows that I like. Generally that is near when I take a test.
I hate people having tvs on in the background or going to restaurants where there are tvs. It annoys me and I can't concentrate as well. I can usually block it out if I try, but it is one more thing that puts me on edge and I have to "worry" about.

I think it may have helped me understand people better in my youth also. I remember getting completely lost in it, like I was part of the TV show. I also found certain people I attached myself to as role models. It was probably a good thing I had this access as a male living in a household full of females. I just wonder now are there really any clear role models left on TV for young boys in fatherless families.

The only reason we have a tv is for my brother when he comes to visit cause he gets bored out of his mind...he is an NT and does not know how to entertain himself. B
but I only like to watch the learning channels like discovery, NatGeo, History, and Animal Planet....I use to like HGTV before they decided to get into real estate.

My family has not owned a television in years. It has too much mind rot.
Because so many elements of the Internet resembles television, we are switching back to dial up. This should hopefully keep my boys from watching some of the mindless videos. I think the cost is $3.00 per month for 100 hours of access.
I did not respond to the pole because I am NT.

I'd hate to be your child, geez.
Don't own a TV; now and again I'll watch a movie on Netflix or catch a bit of a TV show at the "general store" by me. In general, I much prefer a good book. But considering how much time I spend/waste on line, I don't claim any bragging rights.
