No, I always feel there's something missing without a dash of spirit in the mix, even though it can be very awkward.

I'll be honest, as a computer nerd the first thing I'd do would probably not even be to say hi to him/her but open it up and start playing with the config files and see if I could mod my new friend to have any cool skills that didn't come included.

But yes, it is very cute (and a little sad because I feel for him, he sounds lonely) what he said. I can understand what he means though, I remember a time when I would have really really loved something like that.

The idea also reminds me of a very short story I read where a guy buys the new product of Instant Girlfriend - like sea monkeys you drop in bathtub and wait 24hours and voila, instant girlfriend - because he's so lonely and can't get any dates. It goes great for a while but ends up with the instant girlfriend leaving him for someone else's instant boyfriend. But as he points out in the end, it's not all that bad since now he can at least talk about his ex - which indicates that he's able to have relationships and puts him a step higher than where he was before getting the instant girlfriend.

I guess I wanted to define more of what J bird said:

"Every friend would have a grade,"

"They would then be labeled for specific flavors, kind of like chicken, beef, pork..."

So, yeah I hope that helps people understand. He wants specific labels and organization.

Grade A Choice?

Somehow I see factory farms of prepackaged friends. Lined up, shoulder to shoulder, pumped full of antibiotics, covered in excrement until the time for washing, packaging and delivery to the Big Box Super Friends Store. A rather dark dystopian world.

Y'know, when you put it that way it sounds like it should have been a Philip K Dick novel, and then subsequently a wonderful movie adaptation with a horribly forced happy ending. It sounds weird and dystopic enough on social issues that I can picture him writing it, and Hollywood would film it in a heartbeat if ya slapped his name on it.

I think the movie A: Artificial Intelligence qualifies. It wasn't based on a Philip K. Dick novel but otherwise fits this concept.

Well, in my view that movie should only qualify for one thing... a refund of the money I paid to see it!
