Herbalist like these really worry me
What's that saying? If it walks like a quack, talks like a quack and quacks like a quack it's probably a duck? Hm, I think maybe I got some part of that mixed up... but there sure is a lot of quack by that herbalist and I wouldn't take medical advice from a duck if you get where I'm going with all my mixed up sayings. ![]()
A small crack appears
In my diplomacy-dike.
“By definition”, I begin
“Alternative Medicine”, I continue
“Has either not been proved to work,
Or been proved not to work.
You know what they call “alternative medicine”
That’s been proved to work?
Medicine.”
-Tim Minchin
Right on
I sometimes blame the rise of alternative medicine in the United States on the lack of universal health care.

Anything with 'magic' in the title makes me highly suspicious.
I believe in herbalism - the practical sort. A good portion of our modern pharmocology can thank plants for their active ingredients. But what these folks are handing you is highly suspect.
What exactly is in the elixirs- do you have an ingredient/concentration list? There are many herbs that are not recommended for children and gotu kola is one of them. What exactly are these elixirs being employed for - what are they trying to treat with them? Herbs are often used proactively - not necessarily in acute conditions. A good herbalist will work with your GP to ensure there aren't any interactions with prescriptions or other treatments. These folks seem to be handing you hope in a bottle for the right price.
Alternative medicine can be a wonder compliment to traditional medicine but please, do some research. Herbs aren't going to 'cure' your children's issues. The reiki can be wonderfully calming but a child having seizures needs to see an internist immediately. Any alternative medical practicioner that has a clue what they are doing should be insisting on this.
Human body is such a complex biomachine that you just can't take a few things here and there and expect it to work. Chemical balance is important, some may lack/too high level of potassium, sodium, dopamine or anything else.
A medication is something that helps you getting better. Hospital and research center got computer and high tech machinery to getting to know the human body better. Medication is used so that the interaction that we know which induced the problem we seek to correct get corrected.
Using alternative medication is for me a random medication. It can work for some biomachine, stall another or do nothing at all.
Some natural herbs are well known to help, but they have a research to back up how they act on the body.
For me alternative medicine is not something I'd want to try, it's a waste of money! I prefere medication that's been proven to work! I don't believe in magic only physic!
