Hm, interesting - I have the feeling I phrased the poll badly, unfortunately! I might post it again at some point...

For now, I'm very curiously at whether people had a "gut response" to the picture - here's another example of it that's perhaps better: http://www.moillusions.com/2006/09/marg ... usion.html I believe the typical NT response would be to notice that something is off in the upside down picture (even perhaps noticing which facial features are different), but to find the right-side up picture to be, well... jarring and quite possibly grotesque. Some comments about it on NT threads noted that it was the kind of thing that might give you nightmares.

How does this jibe with your experience of the illusions?

On both Mona Lisa and Margaret Thatcher nothing "jumped out" at me on the upside down photos. For Mona Lisa, it didn't immediately jump out in the right side up pictures but then I "got it". With Margaret Thatcher, the right side up picture is a little more grotesque and jumped out right away.
With the spinning dancer, I first saw her spinning anti-clockwise, but then she changed direction on me; I couldn't make her do this by concentrating/focussing but the did change direction a couple of times. Also, if I clicked off the page and then opened it again, she would be anti-clockwise again, then change. I'm left-handed.

Without looking hard I didn't notice anything in the upside down picture. Right side up the difference was immediate.

I immediately saw the difference in the upside down pictures, and also immediately saw it in the right side up pictures.

I saw the difference right away in both pictures.

I could see that they were different. But, without spending time working it out, I could not have said which was altered and which was unaltered. Hope that makes sense.

Spining dancer only spins clockwise for me.
