Why cure cancer?.
Because people's loved ones are dying. My father, example, is dying of cancer. I want a cure as soon as possible.

There are not enough options for me to select from. Here is my opinion:

*I am against a cure for me because I like the way I am. I am not a disorder---I am different.

*I believe in the freedom of choice for those who either seek a cure or choose to opt against a cure.

*Whereas I am amongst those who are against a cure for themselves, I see many autistics that I believe would benefit from a cure if it existed.

I refuse to answer the question until the term cure is better defined as it can have multiple meanings and nuances in this context that could change which answer I would pick.

You cannot ask aspies a "simple question". We see shades of gray within the shades of gray.

The problem here is a cure for babies, I think that should be added to the poll like this

1. Cure for anyone who wants it over 21 (or whatever age you think is best)
2. Cure for anyone at any age including unborn babies at parents discretion
3. No cure for anyone even people who want it

I would vote 3 because I disagree with the development of technology that will alter people's minds and other less invasive ways should be found to make people's lives better.

This captures a little more of the complexity. I hate my social ineptitude, not for how it feels, but for how it dominates outcomes in my life. I don't "feel" broken. But if I could change they way I interact with the world in a way that reduces the roadblocks that seem to pop up out of nowhere, I would seriously consider such a cure. Is it a drug? Behavioral modification? Surgery? Each of these carries benefits and risks and so any "cure" needs to be assessed for benefits AND risk. I would love to see more of this nuanced discussion and a lot less pro cure anti cure which team are you on crap. It strikes me as juvenile and unproductive.

A straightforward poll.

An oversimplification of a complex topic.

Agreed. However, I have voted against a cure for autism. I don't believe that autism is a disease, but it's just how a person is. It is far more complex than being simply a disease that needs a cure. Everyone has their own opinion as to whether or not autism is a bad thing for them. For me personally, I have always been this way and I know no better, therefore, I don't see it as a bad thing (even though I was bullied to hell at school and still have a few difficulties with socialising, but what the hey).

This. Since autism is on a spectrum, wanting to be 'cured' of an ASD should be determined on an individual basis.
