My iPod mini original lasted me years and years. I updated straight to an ipod Touch which is getting on in it's years. Apple even gives me free upgrade software, which I decline. I don't care about the brand. All I know is that I can drown out the sound inside packed trains and buses, I can go on long walks and when I get to a public area I only have a little bit of stimming which looks like I'm just enjoying my music anyway. It really helps to ease my sensory stress.

MP3 players are the only way I can even go to supermarkets or last in malls more than 10 mins. So yes, love them so much. And that "not listening to anything, just using it as an excuse not to talk to people" thing, done that too sooo often. My family also loves them, because thanks to them, I can do all those things that I had so much trouble doing before - even if it is in lower doses than an average person might be able to.

I have an iPod Nano, and I love it.
Sadly, it's been blamed as the reason why I don't like to talk.

For me, it cuts out a lot of public 'unnecessary' talk and chit chat, so when I do need to talk, i.e asking for something in a store, I'm calm enough to do so.

May be you are the same?

You mean MP3 players generically? Oh yes, absolutely.
You mean iPods specifically? Pfft, no.

Yeah, MP3 players are awesome! I always get cheap MP3 players because I know that they will either get lost or break. So I wanted to replace my last player (which fell into a toilet and reeked horribly), lucked out and found the Samsumg TicToc which supports OggVorbis and Flac, has more than 32 MB of storage* and charges via USB.

* I always ask for a player with more than 32 Megabytes of storage because I want to weed out salescritters who don't have a clue.

And hopefully, just looks like another drive when connected to the OS it's being used with so you can simply copy files to it, and you don't get forced to play some lock-in game with crap proprietary 'control' software. 8)

Hmm - this implies there are some who do have a clue. Interesting...

My Ipod is my life saver. I hate leaving the house without it because when I put it on it shuts off the whole world for me and I can go about in peace in my bubble.

Fortunately this one does have such software but degrades gracefully without it (it only lacks the ability to speak track information for me if I do not use it, however I notice that it does not like Nautilus and its habit to reate dotfiles).

Well, I did not want to admit that I do it to secretly enjoy grown men confuse mega- and gigabytes. :D

And ONCE, I met a salescritter with a clue.

I mean any kind of MP3 player in general. I have never owned anything other than Ipods so just used them as the example.

Oh, Ok. I guess it was the "Thank you apple" that threw me.

I should have put thank you to whoever came up with the idea of portable music players, as they have been a real live saver to me.

Who did invent them? I guess the first would have been the Sony Walkman?

Portable Music Players have been very useful to me as conversation deterrents. I own an Ipod touch right now. before that I had a nano. Before that I had a portable CD player.

I use it to drown out the noises that annoy me (sounds like people arguing etc). I try to put it on the right volume soft enough to hear the important sounds, but loud enough to drown out the annoying sounds.

Oh yes, absolutely - they're a brilliant idea and my sanity has been saved by them more times than I can count.

Much, much earlier than you'd think:

Quote:
The Radio Hat was a portable radio built into a pith helmet that would bring in stations within a 20 mile (32 km) radius. It was introduced in early 1949 for $7.95 as the "Man-from-Mars Radio Hat." Thanks to a successful publicity campaign, the Radio Hat was sold at stores from coast to coast in the United States.
Apparently it had a 20 hour battery life, which is probably around 19 hours and 59 minutes longer than the credibility of the wearer.

Technical details here, should you feel like building one.

BTW: what kind of headphones do you use? I use either giant DJ headphones (they were cheap, they cancel lot of noise) or the white and blue ones which came with my player (I like how the cable feels in my hand but they canel very little noise)
