That is exactly what I meant. I can't say I'm in favour of tattoos, but what happens when your skin starts to sag and wrinkle? I didn't mean to lash out against people with tattoos, or anything. Some people who I love and care for very much have them. I also don't go around judging people because they have tattoos.

vetivert, being in your thirties still means you're young.

Glenn, I always think tattoos look silly, but hale_bopp hit the nail on the head about when skin starts to wrinkle and sag.

Well, sadly, you can ask this of older people whether or not they have tattoos ... most people would prefer to conceal skin that is saggy and wrinkled , even if tattoo-free. Luckily - although I am even older than Vetivert (!) - I still have smooth skin that is quite firm. Maybe when I get older (and wrinkled) I will wear long sleeves that don't display my arms any more. I'll still be pleased I have my tattoo though, because it means something to me. I guess this must also be true of those people who choose to have tattoos done on parts of the body that are never on public display :-) ...like the late Oliver Reed, for example!

thanks for letting me know...

i'm now in my forties, and have every intention of making my own special birthday present to myself on my fiftieth a new tattoo. it hadn't occurred to me before this thread, but i think i shall be revelling in the fact that getting older means i don't have to be so conservative any more (as if i have ever been).

not all skin goes wrinkly, anyway. and what's wrong with wrinkles? youth is wasted on the young, someone said. hmmm...

i refer you to these images: http://www.campaignforrealbeauty.com/

Thanks for posting that link- there is nothing wrong with getting old and why the hell should it change how you act.

I have a red rose with a blood tear coming from the base of the stem and a ribbon with "Mish" across it tattooed on my back on the left upper hip side.

I am very proud of any wrinkles and gray hairs that pop up. I wear them like my badges of honor.
I could care less what others think of them...I never thought I would make it into adulthood. I relish every birthday and still very much enjoy life and all it has to offer me. My young life was way too hard and my life now as an older person is just right.
I am looking forward to getting even older and just don't understand those that are busy fretting about their youth slipping away from them trying this cream and that injection. What a waste of time - we all must face the inevitable. I'm going to enjoy life before they lower me into my grave.

Who knows? I might decide to get a shar-pei tattoo next and you know that tatt's only gonna get better and better looking as I age

WOAH!! ! Did I ever say that I don't like old people or that there is anything wrong with wrinkles? No. But over time, TATTOOS can become distorted. I don't like them, but I never said you guys shouldn't. Whatever makes you happy!

I'm thinking of getting a vegvisir (Viking runic compass) put on my left arm, and the Chinese calligraphy meaning "No Fate" put on my right shoulder. The vegvisir would be to be a psychological focus to prevent me from being lost spiritually and emotionally, and the Chinese calligraphy meaning "No Fate" would serve to remind me to make my own decisions.

Bec, hello. I just wanted to post this to tell you that I was not lashing out at you or anything. I love your posts. My passionate side is just a little rough around the edges and sometimes I just appear to be mad when really I am just trying to show how strongly I feel about some things.

I hope the younger generations on this forum knows that getting older is not a bad thing or something to be dreaded or feared. It's a wonderful time especially if you are autistic and view the world in the unique child-like way we can, such as seeing things (like a sunrise or sunset) as if it were the very first time. I never tire of nature...can you tell?

What a fabulous idea, Crion87 for tattoos. I also like your reasons. It's funny, but I also look at the tattoo I have in a spiritual sort of way. It was not a spontaneous moment for me either, but took many years to decide on exactly what I wanted.

For those of you who have tattoos- how do you go about checking out how good the tattoo artists work is?? The reason I ask is that on another internet forum someone posted a pic of a Jim Morrison tattoo they were having done and it was terrible- he looked like he had a severe case of mumps Laughing

I went to someone that a friend of mine had used. I went to the artist's shope and he had a photo album of tatoos he has done, so you can see the range of his work. Good tattoo artists, in my opinion will have a display of their work.

I have a Claddagh Ring on my ankle. It symbolizes friendship, love and fidelity. Also, I am of Irish descent and my Dad gave me my first Claddagh ring when I was 16.

My wedding band is platinum with Claddagh Rings and the Book of Kells artscroll on it.

Tallgirl.

I want them in a place that isn't overpowering and very small. I'd like a triforce and the three spiritual stones.

HEAR, HEAR! Maybe i can get a Triforce on the back of my hand, like Link!

Sorry, but I'm going to have to be controversial here..... I personally find tattoos of all kinds ugly, repellant and disfiguring (holds breath and awaits backlash..... )

Mind you, I've always struggled with understanding any of the basic concepts of "fashion" and why most people are so obsessed with it - all of that spending of time, effort and money on achieving a particular appearance with (to me) no appeciable benefit has always been beyond my comprehension.

I look like a burst mattress and am proud of it :)

careful, archmage - hands and feet can be dodgy places to have tattooed. the skin is thinest there, and so there's more chance of infection and septicaemia. not trying to put you off, just making sure you know what's what.

and, by the way, any reputable tattooist will spend time explaining anything you want about tats, and the best ones will do any design you care to choose, and will sdvise you on its suitability, etc.
