To be diagnosed or not to be diagnosed, that is the question
A dx isn't going to change who you are. If you get a dx, all those things you have been struggling with will have an explanation. It will give you a direction in learning the skills you may need help with. A dx can also protect you on the job. I believe the UK and US are similar in that way - you cannot be fired for something attributable to your dx. I don't know about you but I have been fired from jobs for my poor grasp of office politics and inappropriate commentary before.
Is it easier for you to beleive you are normal but struggling or that you have a diagnosable condition that creates those challenges and may need a different perspective?
For me, I'd rather not feel like a loser. I've been struggling my whole life only to find out that there is a reason why. I found comfort in the realization 'its not just me.'
Whatever you decide, try to choose the option that is kindest to you. If a dx will cause you extreme anxiety - skip it. If a dx will help you accept your challenges and move forward - go for that. Maybe a long hard look at those questions is in order before making the decision.
