I need to do some serious reading on ADHD (or ADD ADD-PI, I don't even know what's what!). Since joining WP I've found that my 'problems' (or 'differences' so to speak) have little to do AS. I was much more of an aspie in my <13 period and sufferered from nearly all of the things I hear about on this forum.

ADHD-C = ADHD Combined type, or what most people think of. It has hyperactive, impulsive, and inattentive symptoms.
ADHD-PI = ADHD Primarily Inattentive type, or the distractable/lack of focus/lack of concentration symptoms without as much of the hyperactivity or impulsiveness (and possibly none of it).
ADHD-PH - ADHD Primarily Hyperactive type. This may as well not exist as a real diagnosis.

Nowadays my obstacles involve trouble with concentration, following a plan, money and time management, impulsiveness, dodgy sleeping patterns and executive (dys)function. I struggle to stay in one mood - I'm either hyper or static, passing from one to the other far too quickly.

Is there any material on ADHD or dysthimia that you would reccomend? - nothing too in-depth tho, or it will join my growing pile of unread litterature. I just wanna rule things out at least

This youtube channel has several short videos from a talk a few years ago that describes salient points about ADHD:

They're the exact same condition, just different acronyms. ADHD is (to my knowledge) the official term, while ADD is mostly used these days by those who have little or no understanding of the condition (and frequently use it in a derogatory sense).

Anyways, yes I was diagnosed with ADHD about a decade or so before I was diagnosed with asperger's. I consider both diagnoses to be accurate.

ADD is the old way of saying ADHD. Most people refer to ADD as the inattentive type only. People who do have little understanding probably still do use the old term and some people with the inattentive type prefer to say ADD to avoid confusion with the hyperactive and combined type.

Edit: Yeah, I was going to recommend some Barkey videos to the person who asked for more information but Verandi beat me to it.

The earliest diagnosis I had was HD at age three.

I was diagnosed with adhd at age five. They put me in special education from first grade all the way up to tenth grade. They retested me when I was in tenth grade then put me in mainstream classes from 11th to 12th grade. When I was tested for Aspergers the doctor doing the test said he saw know signs of learning disabiliity. I feel I was cheated out of a proper education. I never went to college I figured I was not prepared enough to handle the courses. I also was afraid I would fail loosing all the money parents would have invested in my education.

They wanted to put me on riddiulen but my father would not let them make a zombie out of me. My teachers were pissed at that I can you with certainty. :P

Ritalin doesn't typically make people into zombies and if someone does experience that side effect they should take them off the medication and try something else.

I was on Ritalin for quite a while. Before I was on that I was on Dexedrine. Now, the Dexedrine did make me a total zombie. My mother says I didn't move much while on it. The Ritalin didn't have such an extreme effect on me.

I had suspected ADHD as a teen because I was hyper as a kid and I pace but mom told me I have ADD not ADHD and I have read that ADD is without hyperactivity. But I had found out ADHD was suspected when I was a preteen. I dunno why my mom says I don't have it and it's ADD I have. Now I am confused.

I was impulsive as a kid and blurted out things without thinking, I fidgeted and was hyper, I couldn't stay focused.

But I also read those were AS symptoms too and fidgeting is stimming and not being able to focus and getting distracted by sounds and noise is sensory issues. Me blurting out stuff, more like me having AS and not having a social filter and I used to just do things to see what would happen. Lot of aspie kids need things to be logical and make sense before they listen. But I also remember doing things I was not aware of and did things without thinking and that is ADHD.

I have never read a lot on this condition. The ADHD PI fits me the most. I cannot listen for long periods of the time and I rend to zone out, too much talking makes my head heavy and my eyes sore I get sleepy. I tend to daydream and then my butt starts to get uncomfortable and itchy so I start to move around in my seat and I tap my foot or fiddle with stuff I have.

Anywho I describe my brain as being in different states throughout the day so if one moment I am barely awake and struggling to watch playschool an hour later I could be pacing around bored out of my mind and unable to focus on anything, and then finally I can be able to watch playschool but feel like it wasn't mentally stimulating enough. So there is never an exact opposite disorder with me. And anyone who says I have Bipolar will be thrown in a fiery pit of doom.

I know how you feel. I have been trying to figure out, all my life, what was wrong and right with me. First, at the age of 27, they thought I was bipolar and put me on Lithium, which got me Lithium Toxicity before my first scheduled blood work. They decided I must not be Bipolar at that point (while I drooled on myself for lack of brain cells). Two years later, they did a neuro-psych evaluation that gave a shopping list of disorders, to include ADD, learning disorder, expressive language disorder, reading disorder and cognitive disorder. The later basically meant that I could analyse the heck out of information but, was unable to make a decision based on those analytical components. Incidental, the analytical department of my cognitive reason was found at genius level, as was a few other mechanical reason features. Now, 10 years later, they are thinking that I am HFA.

I have to say, I think the neuropsych battery just gave a partial shopping list to the HFA and an indicator of ADD to boot. I can express myself fine in the written word, its the face to face communication that sends me over the edge and no one can teach me anything, I must teach myself (so the learning disorder is dependant on whose perception you view it through).

:) ... Oh, and ADD is an inability to filter out unimportant information from the environment, cause distractibility and inattentiveness, or so I was told. Hmm, kind of sounds similar to Autism to me ....

It my case, it didn't really affect me at all and I was taken off it after two prescriptions.

It can work for non ADHD people too. I suppose on the ASD spectrum some medications have absolutely no effect for some people.
My dose is small so sometimes I can't feel it or see it making a difference so I have something to eat and not only does it work it might overstimulate me. In that case I have yogurt, which calms me right down. Yes I know, weird.

I was diagnosed with ADHD when I was seven - at the end of first grade, to be precise, after my teacher told my parents about problems I was having. I was on a variety of different ADHD medications throughout the entirety of my schooling, and Ritalin and Adderall were extremely helpful.
I was diagnosed with AS earlier this year, but I don't think I really have it... a combination of social phobia, dysthymia, and rather serious ADHD just made it look like I did, I think. This probably happens often. There's absolutely no doubt that I have ADHD, though. You could copy-and-paste the diagnostic criteria for it and have a startlingly accurate profile of me.

ADHD doesn't come with the level of social problems one sees in people with AS and autism, aside from those caused by the distractibility or hyperactivity (rather than an actual lack of understanding). That seems to me to be the most significant difference. I lack a degree in psychiatry, though, so don't take my word for it. :D

On a side note, I wish people would stop the whole "LUL dis person wif ADHD didn't finish [insert a thing they were supposed to/going to finish] cos they got distracted by a squirrel lul"
...WHY IS IT ALWAYS A FREAKING SQUIRREL
Okay, I'll end the post here before I digress any more xD

I know how you feel. There are no bloody squirrels in my country too. And I'm scared of the birds in my backyard so I'm not going to be distracted by them.

ADHD is less unable to filter unimportant information but becoming interested in everything. Or as one doctor said 'having focused attention on the things you most love.'

I was diagnosed with AS when I was really young, so I don't actually remember the meeting, just my parents telling me it was "Asperger's". Then, when I was 16, I was diagnosed with ADHD. I don't think I can begin to tell you guys how much meds help with adressing my issues of hyperactivity and inattentiveness.
