Hi Purplefox,
Incidentally, I am in the exact same position as you!
I have been unofficially diagnosed with depression by my counsellor.
She then found out some things that alarmed her, and sent me to the public health services.
Once there, the health services explained away my eating and sleeping problems, and well as depression, by unofficially diagnosing me with aspergers, and sending me away, promising to refer me to an autism specialist. They still haven't got back to me after 3 weeks...
What to do...
It's an annoying situation.
The difference for me with the thermometers would be that I would rate depression, anxiety, etc. very high (when that was the case), and then the "needing help" bar as low (with associated positive affect) because I don't like talking to people and usually don't get much out of it. I often have an urge to go talk to someone, because that is "supposed to help," but then it does nothing. The other person expresses sympathy, and it feels like there's a hole there in the conversation, where some reaction to sympathy is supposed to happen but I feel nothing at all.
Nothing really fixes my negative emotions but studying and making ideas. Nothing. Talking to my mom helps because she's comforting, but to really fix it... no, there's nothing that can be done.
I think that is something psychologists don't often take into account.
