I get "You're weird" from nearly all quarters. The only person who calls me eccentric is my mom. If this thread is any indication, it appears my mom is simply being polite, haha.

I don't like the identification of 'straight'.

I prefer being called "conspicuous."

But seriously, I do like the word "eccentric." It's a great way to be, in my opinion.

I'd give anything to be called "eccentric". I've been called "crazy", "coo-coo", and "loony", but never anything that hinted at my way of thinking as being a positive attribute.

Of course I don't have money or social capital so I'll be lucky to be upgraded to "weird".

I always saw eccentric as weirdx100.
Perhaps I got it the wrong way around.

I use the word to describe myself a lot because a lot of scientists were called that.

edit: I was trying to analyse the word to see where it got it's meaning and was almost right.
Eccentric to me sounds not quite is the centre; the centre being normalcy.

Quote:
From Medieval Latin eccentricus, derived from Greek ekkentros, "out of the center", from ek-, ex- "out of" + kentron, "center". Eccentric first appeared in English in 1551 as an astronomical term meaning "a circle in which the earth, sun, etc. deviates from its center." Five years later, in 1556, an adjective form of the word was added. 129 years later, in 1685, the definition evolved from the literal to the figurative, and eccentric began being used to describe unconventional or odd behavior. A noun form of the word – a person who possesses and exhibits these unconventional or odd qualities/behaviors – didn't appear until 1832.

It just keeps getting better
Quote:
Eccentricity is often associated with genius, intellectual giftedness, or creativity. The individual's eccentric behavior is perceived to be the outward expression of their unique intelligence or creative impulse.[1] In this vein, the eccentric's habits are incomprehensible not because they are illogical or the result of madness, but because they stem from a mind so original that it cannot be conformed to societal norms.
